I don't think £65,000 for a four bed was given as what is likely to happen, just what would be nice to happen and stop people from being such wage slaves.
£65k for a 4-bed has been a reality in many areas in the last 10 years ... then it got crazy.

My parents spent just a tad more for a 3-bed semi 13 years ago ... then it went nuts. I guess it's now worth about £200k but £250k at peak.

There are still 4-beds in some areas at £65k so it's not completely bonkers.

If BTL-style lending had never happened, if 6x joint income had never happened (stayed at about 3x), if lie-to-buy had never happened .... many houses in many areas wouldn't be much more than that.... say £100k for a good sized house in an average area.

I don't even know where Cambodia is. I've never been abroad.

It is a nice place for a holiday.

On the otherhand, ISTL doesn't seem to realise we don't have some automatic right to earn massively high wages.. where jobs are being lost, and the economic paradigm of the last 12 years is collapsing in on itself.

  • We could solve the housing shortage overnight if we exported the unemployed to India and paid the Indian Authorities to house and feed them till they die.

While we are at it, let's outsource the prison service to India too. Maybe then we could afford to pay retired ex-workers a decent pension.

    Maybe the Welsh too?

In a cut down way, I think this would be a good idea for a lot of sub-groups.

There's a lot of Australia that's not being used too ... that big middle bit.

On the contrary dopester, I am very aware how fortunate we are to have been born in a country where the oppertunities for lifestyle, education and luxuries are available to us that other people in the world are not dso fortunate, hence why I mentioned the people in Campbodia whom I found very humbling when I visited there.

We most certainly do not have the right to be able to buy a 3/4 bed home AND have enough income to spend on luxuries on top of lifes essentials.

Certainly, the majority of people on Earth would love to be in the position we are fortunate to have in Britain.

I once read that if you earn £27k, you are in the top 1% earners in the world

You should stick to showing facts an debate topics instead of trying to portray what words or mindsets other posters you think (generally wrongly in my experience) they have.

If I give you a nice bone, will you lie down nicely for a while ;)

But in many places in the world rent is 10p/week for their home.

Also, in the UK, more than half the working people aren't earning £27k. I'm not ... currently it's about £8k (figure changes daily/weekly/monthly, but that's the current annualised figure based on June to date).

Go back to snoozing Rob, it better suits you ;)

P.S. The user name IveSeenTheLight is in reference to the fact that I realised I could pay off my mortgages in less than half the standard 25 year mortgage period by overpaying the capital.

I'm sure you realise that in doing this you also save massivley on the interest that is paid out on the mortgage loan.

It was one of the reasons I joined MSE to see if there was any more savings I could make. :T

I doubt you can make / save money by snoozing ;)

If you snooze, instead of sitting watching TV with the light on scoffing biscuits, then you can save the cost of a TV and lightbulb and biscuits. This could add up to a significant 50p/day, or £180/year.

    Why not? I rent one.

Just from personal belief and experience of the rental market I have a vested interest in.

To purchase a 1 bed / studio flat would severly limit both the rental market for the area I have the VI in and for future saleability for the same reasons.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with a 1 bed flat (I rented one at one time as well) or a studio, but have found more rental stability and more people in the market looking for a minimum of 2 beds.
