I have reduced my toiletries budget loads by taking the following measures
- dont use mouthwash at all
- bulk buy toothpaste when it is on offer
- use soap, no need for bubble bath or anything like that
- use washable sanitary protection - it feels great too, just like soft cotton on the skin, you can even make your own easily with a sewing machine apparently
- I get all the freebies and free samples that i can, including some off this site, always use up any I get bought at birthdays etc0 -
Hi GettingHitched, and everyone else!
I've been gradually changing habits around this lately, so thought I'd share what I've been doing
Toothpaste - bargain stuff from Netto etc, haven't worked on this yet...
Mouth Wash - don't use
Shampoo and Conditioner - bicarbonate of soda and vinegar - REALLY. Will find a link if people are interested... Basically mix bicarb and water, massage into dry scalp, leave on while you're havin a wash in the shower, then rinse, rinse in vinegar/water mix, then rinse. My hair's knocking on for being down to my waist, and has been gorgeous and soft using this for several weeks nowResult! (cider vinegar, not non brewed condiment, lol!)
Hard Soap - I made someFirst try and it was great. Only ingredients were bottle of cheap olive oil, bit of caustic soda (!), and a small bottle of cococut oil (99p from an Aisan shop). Made enough to last us about a year!
Roll on Deodrant - I use a PitRock, bought for about £3 a few years ago, and still going strong. It's only deodorant, not anti perspirant, but works fine for that. we do have a cheap anti perspirant that we use occasionally if it's really hot or something
Tampons amd Pantyliners - er, I sewed my own sanitary towelsAnd they're working fine
In fact, they're so cheery and colourful that I want to wear them all the time
Moisturiser ( day and night ) - just Boots own simple unperfumed moisuriser, 99p and lasts ages. Use day and night
Eye Cream - don't use
Face Wipes - don't use - always use face scrub, or just water on a flannel
Face Scrub - make my ownI have a small pot in which I put a teaspoon of ground almonds, teaspoon of wheatbran, a bit of sweet almond oil (about £3 and it's lasted ages and ages and ages, use for all kinds of stuff), and a couple of drops of lavendar essential oil (or tea tree - again, probably £2-3 and lasts forever, also good for burns etc). Small pot lasts a week or two, day and night, the first couple of days it's quite scrubby (!), then goes a bit softer, like a paste, so not scrubbing skin madly every day
Bubble Bath - don't use, occasionally put a bit of almond oil in bath for softness, and maybe some essential oil
Shower Gel - use home made soap
Hope that helps, and doesn't make me sound like a complete freak!Probably not hugely old style, but it works out about... (hang on, I've never worked it out before)...
Toothpaste - 99p per 3 months (?) = 33p/month
Mouth Wash
Shampoo and Conditioner 77p (bicarb) + 1.50 (vinegar) per about 4 months (ish) = 56p/month
Hard Soap - er, £2.50 (olive oil) + 20p (caustic soda, about 1/5 of a bottle) + 99p (coconut oil) = £3.69 per year at the rate I'm going! = 31p/month
Roll on Deodrant - £3 per about 5 years! = 5p/month (+ about 50p for a cheap deodorant maybe twice a year = 8p/month)
Tampons amd Pantyliners - nothing! Hooray! all made from scraps of material and more than adequate
Moisturiser ( day and night ) - 99p per about 3 months? 4 months? let's say 33p/month
Eye Cream - 0
Face Wipes -0
Face Scrub - 99p (ground almonds) + 89p (wheatbran) + £3 almond oil = £4.88 (been using for about 6 months and not even quarter of way down any of these, so even if it lasts all year, it'll be about 40p/month)
Bubble Bath - 0
Shower Gel - 0
Grand total... (ish)... = £2.06 a month, or about £25 a year.
I've actually overestimated rather a lot there too - I'll probably get more than a year out of the face scrub materials, and various other things.
Hope that's help! Quite revealing for me too!0 -
GettingHitched wrote: »Okay, Im compiling my shopping list for the coming month ( Soda Crystals, Star Drops and Cheap Bleach ), have got our food bill down to what I am happy with ( without having to resort to cheap supermarket meat, and caged eggs ) looking back at last months spend, toiletries seem to be a big expense that I really wish I could reduce in cost, but have no idea how to.
So come on you old stylers, how much do you spend on toiletries ( essentials ) and how do you make them truly MSE
List of what I buy every month
Toothpaste
Mouth Wash
Shampoo and Conditioner
Hard Soap
Roll on Deodrant
Tampons amd Pantyliners
Moisturiser ( day and night )
Eye Cream
Face Wipes
Face Scrub
Bubble Bath
Shower Gel
Bubble bath and shower gel - you can use the same product for both instead of buying seperate. Which also saves on space.
If you're willing to try different types you can save a little on pantyliners and tampons by signing up for free samples of both (Always and Tampax usually have offers on, as will others). So if you look online and keep ordering you'll have enough per month for your needs unless you have heavy bleeding.
Shampoo and conditioner - tesco do a range of shampoo's and conditioners that are 59p and are currently 2 for £1, don't know if that's a long term offer but if you buy this monthly it would work out to a nice little saving.
Face wipes - Poundland sell these by a brand called pure - currently 2 packs for a £1. Most have around 20 wipes in so stocking up can prove cheaper in the long run - eg using this offer now you could get 12 packs (Almost 12 months of wipes) for £6. Plus the wipes are quite large so if you cut them in half you could double the amount you had (Unless you've worn a lot of make-up that day of course).
Eyecream - Poundland have one in their dermavit (I think that's how it's spelt) range with Q10 in, it's pretty good, I use their day cream.
Just reading through this I now realise why I don't spend that much money and friends of mine buy the same type of products but struggleThe "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. I remember those, they smell lovely - very refreshing on humid days and just before bed.The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Hello!
I have found that one product does all 3, hair, body and bubbles! I personally couldn't relax and chill out afer a long day without having a lovely bubble bath.
I use a cherry soda shower gel that leaves my hair feeling gorgeous, gives me loads of bubbles and leaves my skin smelling beautiful. One bottle is £3, but lasts me all month, so works out considerably cheaper than buying all 3 separately.
Google mio time for mio's website, or just find somethingyou love the smell of0 -

I use an epilady which I got for Christmas yonks ago. The first time I used it for my underarms I gritted my teeth and just went for it quickly - and tried to ignore the tears pouring down my face :rotfl:. It doesn't hurt at all now.0
