Toiletries - Old Style

Okay, Im compiling my shopping list for the coming month ( Soda Crystals, Star Drops and Cheap Bleach ), have got our food bill down to what I am happy with ( without having to resort to cheap supermarket meat, and caged eggs ) looking back at last months spend, toiletries seem to be a big expense that I really wish I could reduce in cost, but have no idea how to.

So come on you old stylers, how much do you spend on toiletries ( essentials ) and how do you make them truly MSE

Mouth Wash

What are facewipes? They sound like something that nwould be expensive and unnecessary to me.

I only buy...toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, soap, pantyliners, facewash and moisturiser.

I have a big stockpile atm from buying special offers and from cheap places like bodycare and home bargains. Hard soap is very cheap and lasts forever - you don't need bubble bath and shower gel. Moisturiser is my big expense cos I have really dry skin but i buy a 500g tub of E45 and it lasts a long time. You can get reusable sanitary towels which I guess will freak a lot of people out but it's no worse than reusable nappies and MUCH better for the environment.

I recently used some tesco clubcard vouchers to 'double up' (ie £5 vocuher was worth £10) to stock up on showergel etc. Also, don't be too loyal to one brand and buy things when they are on offer. I find that Savers has some good offers, and ADSA often has 4 bottles of handwash / shampoo / showergel for £3.
Baby wipes are a good substitute for face wipes. Alternatively, how about just uing a flannel and some facewash / face- friendly soap?

Toothpaste - I buy on offer or from places like Home Bargains £1 for Colgate/Aquafresh pumps.
Mouth Wash - Dont use
Shampoo and Conditioner - Again buy when on offer at places like Wilkinsons. They often have L'Oreal etc on 2 for 1
Hard Soap - Pack of 6 Imperial Leather is £1.25 in Wilkinsons
Roll on Deodrant - 79p for Imperial Leather in Netto/Wilkinsons/Home Bargains
Tampons amd Pantyliners - I don't use but my daughter does. I buy her Always Ultra when I see them on offer & big boxes of tampons too.
Moisturiser ( day and night ) - I use Aqueous cream both day & night 99p for 500g tub
Eye Cream - Don't use a seperate eye cream
Face Wipes - Don't use
Face Scrub - Don't use. A dermatologist told me years ago that it was far better & gentler on facial skin to rub clean skin with a piece of muslin or a flannel. It works for Victoria Beckham according to her book
Bubble Bath - Either cheap or on offer
Shower Gel - As bubble bath

Having read this back it does sound like I'm a wrinkly old hag with awful skin :rotfl: I'm really not & regularly get told that I don't look 42. I hate buying lots of different products when a few basic ones will work too IYSWIM I think the answer to your question would be to buy when on offer - scan the flyers that come with the local paper etc and when you see a bargain stock up. My Nan could have washed the entire street she had so much soap but she liked a particular brand and bought loads when it was a good price. HTH

sadly, I do have terrible skin ( 26 and still have acne! ) so I am careful about what I use.

I do use Wilkos facewipes, as often I finish work late, and if I have them then I will take off my make up for the day ( I do get them 3 4 2 usually, ditto moisturiser/eye cream are wilkos own brand )
I am a big fab of Wilkos make up, and buy a fair bit of that ( but that comes out of my own money )
Cant use cheapy tampons ( give me thrush ) and I found towels uncomfortable ( god im terrible arent I )
I just feel guilty and annoyed at myself for spending so much on it all.

Hi all

I am a trained beauty gal. Facewipes have lots of water in them that completely dry out your skin. You are better off buying the Vitamin E cleanser from Tesco (96p ish) putting a 10 pence piece in your hands then massaging into skin. Then get a clean flannel and moisten with a little warm water (this opens pores) then take off the cleanser with that. Apply moisturiser, job done x those wipes really are bad for you xx

Try to just get everything when it's on offer even if you don't need it. Do you maybe have cheap shops like Bodycare or Poundland etc around where you love? Bodycare is amazing- you can get 3 or 4 packs of face wipes for £1

If you get free prescriptions you can sign up for the minor ailment scheme at your chemist. My mum gets her aqueous cream, without a prescription, from Boots for free.

Toothpaste - supermarket own
Mouth Wash - don't use
Shampoo and Conditioner - supermarket own family sized one, olive oil works as conditioner
Hard Soap - Dove,use this to wash face too
Roll on Deodorant - supermarket own
Tampons and Pantyliners - supermarket own
Moisturiser - old fashioned Nivea
Eye Cream - only use freebie samples
Face Wipes - don't use
Face Scrub - sugar and water does the trick

I find the wipes just don't get my skin clean enough. If I get the odd spot I put toothpaste on it and I always use sun protection of factor 50 (supermarket own).
Bubble Bath - don't use
Shower Gel - 1litre bottle for one euro

speaking of suncream....i was in boots the other day and the nivea stuff was two for one.

still expensive i guess but they do a "light feeling" 50+ which sinks in nicely and doesnt make your skin feel all suncreamy - i hate that.

When im caught short of conditioner at my bfs (silly men not conditioning properly!) I moisturse my hands and just run them through my wet hair with good results.
