Has anyone paid money to the WRONG account

I have just finished arranging for a monthly payment of £1000 to go into my newly opened Coventry Buiding Society First Account.
I was just about to press OK to confirm the details when something didn't look quite right.
I rechecked and there it was.
On my spreadsheet where I keep my banking details the Coventry BS is listed next to Citibank alphabetically.
Citibank's Sort Code is 40-63-01.
Coventry's Sort Code is 40-63-10.
I had transposed the last 2 digits. [] Lucky escape!

Chances are that the account you try sending money to by typing a wrong digit would not exist, and about a week later the funds generally get bounched back, or held in a suspense account until you query it.
Should you be very unlucky, and send it to an account number that does exist, the bank will approach the customer and ask if the funds can be taken out, if the customer refuses, thats your lot AFAIK.

I wouldnt wanna take the risk! Lucky Escape indeed!

From my online banking account i once made a payment to the wrong credit card company for £300. The company that recieved the payment sent the money back no problems a few days later.

It's why most transfers come up with an 'OK?' check before they are actioned. And it's daft to get into the habit of just hitting the Enter button - better just to make that last check.

But had it gone - your Bank would have recovered it as you could readily explain the error. Although they could reasonably have charged for the trouble. And they certainly don't have to ask the permission of whoevers account it had accidentally gone in to

That's incorrect. It might cause some hassle getting it back but the money still belongs to you and the bank doesn't have to ask for it back, they can take it.

Well i did, into another persons account, i never wanted it to as i typed the account number wrong, but went into abbey and they just took it back out of the persons account and put it in the account i wanted it to go in, in the first place... all they did was send the man a letter whos account i paid it in to by mastake and that was end of story. never asked the mans permission or nothing.

im sick of these people that come on here and give faulse info i was panicing all night, reading this forum and was even more worried, so dont listen to the dip sticks on here, its as simple as 1,2,3..

It's not false info at all - different banks have different procedures.

Think of it simply - if you could convince Abbey to do that, why couldn't a fraudster do the same, and start moving amounts of money around?

All you, as Mr X, would need to know is that Mr Y was sending some to Mr Z. You could then go to Mr Z's bank and say sorry, I paid it in to the wrong account...

By the time the real Mr Z noticed, the money may be gone.

    Hi all.

Another pickle im in. I pay money in to my girlfriends account every month. I wanted to put a bit more in so went through the process to do a payment direct from my bank account. When I went to transfer I made sure the correct card number was the same as the one I do the payment too.

However the money did not show in her account so I call the bank and said no money had been returned to me and the payment was made. It materialises that the payment although the same number as the one I always use was for a credit card with Natwest.

Now I am panicking as I think I have lost £400 in someone else's account. How can this be how can 2 accounts both have the same long number and what are my chances of getting my money back. the bank shouted at me and said if I was unsure I should have called them. fair enough but 'Get my £400 back'

After reading a few posts I am livid I could lose my money if the person decides not to want to pay me back. Im hoping that a credit card with that number does not exist but Im just not feeling that lucky.

When you transfer money you don't use the card number. You use an account and sort code. And usually in the reference you put something "payment from olly" or something of use.

Usually for a credit card, you put the card number in the reference section. And credit services will have the same sort code and account number.

Were you paying money into her credit card account or a normal account?

On first direct it says 'Pay bill' and have a standing order set up for her and the money goes in. I went to the pay bill section and put in Natwest it came up with a list. I asked her which card it was and she said visa classic card which i chose (now I know that is a credit card). the card number was put in and it was accepted. Im guessing if the account/credit card did not excist then the payment would not have gone through. although I am amazed that 2 accounts can have the same long number.

Your right it normally does ask for those details but I was being thick and didnt think about it until the money did not go in to her account. yes this is my error granted and i can admit that but I can lose that money just like that. It makes no sense to me.
