  • Buy yourself local sim cards - Bouygues Telecom France and Amena in Spain both have half decent prepaid rates.
  • In France have a look at SFR PAYG sims. I think that they're 30 euros with 11 euro credit at the moment. If it's a couple of savvy people that you will be contacting in the UK, text them when you want to speak and get them to call you back on your French sim using inclusive xnet mins if they're on O2, Orange. Or use one of the cheap international call methods if using a landline.

You might also look at Vodafone Passport which can be used in both those countries - SFR in France and Vodafone Spain. On payg, off-peak calls cost 5p per minute, incoming calls 0p/min, with a 75p connect fee per call.

    For other SIMs, see http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/operators.html

The Spanish numbers have some cheap favourite number tariffs, or there is a new Vodafone flat rate per call up to an hour, and French ones have some bolt-on minute bundles, either of which could be used with calling card access.
