Kitchen Floor Tiling
Comments
-
My cousin is a floor tiler and with mates/family rates recently charged me £200 (and appprox 15 cups of tea!) for tiling through from the hallway into the kitchen. (Lots of twists and turns aswell)
When i moved into the property the floors had been covered in screed covering the old marley tiles, i laminated over but when the laminate was removed ready for tiling the whole lot had cracke dmeaning it had to be removed and levelled before he could attempt to do anything else.
I provided the tiles (porcelain), adhesive and grout (using his topps tiles trade discount) and he used levelling compound and a sealant left over from a previous job (cheers previous customer).
It took him two days working on his own and he constantly asked if i were happy with what he were doing and becuse of the tiles i used he even talked me through different ways they could be laid, as one way meant some would be a tripping hazard as they were slightly textured leaving a lip.
He said the day i paid him had it been for anyone else and it would have ben an easy straight in and out job it would have been £350 but he normally would have charged more with the floor needing prep work due to the damage. HTH.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

What I meant was that a hell of a lot of tilers just seem to think that a coat of unibond will fix everything! An awful lot refuse to be told otherwise. (Especially when I try to advise, being a young woman I couldn'y possibly know!)
The tiles which cause problems and are best left alone are the old marley tiles that always seemed to be stuck into council properties built in the 60's. When you rip them up you are faced with nasty black or brown adhesive that is a massive job in itself, I've even had customers use Petrol to get this up(I certainly did NOT tell them to do that!)
If you decide to take up Marley tiles then at least 80% of the sticky yuck stuff has to be taken up too before you can even think about tiling. popping levelling compound over the top isn't very effective as it doesn't key to the adhesive either.
Do mean the horrible brown flat square type of tile?, if its the type I'm thinking about from years ago, and yes, the council had them in all the kitchens and hallways, I'm sure you shouldnt remove them, unless you get them checked, as there is asbestos underneath.
This is one of the reasons tilers wont remove them.0 -
Oooops, meant to reply to Op as well lol.
The price he has given you is far too expensive, specially as they are only ceramic, my friend had porcelain tiles put down in the kitchen/hallway, and he charged her approx £25 sqm, she supplied the adhesive as she wanted a special type or something.0 -

If what i was told by previous council inspector the tiles do contain a minimal amount of asbestos but it is not of a dangerous level unless you are over them breaking them up without a mask, and even then you would need to be gettin up thousands of them - but that could just have been a fob off not to replace the ones i had that were broken.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j
