I think we should boycott the OP books.

Not only is the op asking for a boycott on WHS (who he is quite happy to use as a point of sale himself BTW) but also for a boycott on Penguin books. Surely this makes you a hypocrite?

I agree this deal might not be the best for the consumer but at the end of the day these travel stores cannot hold a huge stock. Clearly a deal was struck between WHS and Penguin that suited both parties, I'm pretty sure WHS would have struck the very same deal with any publisher putting forward the best deal which they can't be blamed for in this economic climate.

Its not a monopoly if a small % of stores within a BRANCH (not the marketplace) choose to stock one brand only due to floor space/financial reasoning. Its up to the other publishing houses to get more competitive!

The "best" dont always sell the most, earn the most or get promoted the most. There are many excellent artists, singers, musicians, actors, writers etc etc who deserve more than they are getting. The passing public are always fed what big business wants.Look at the charts, Saturday night tv, magazine racks. The super dooper fantastically best selling "SUN" hardly has a worthwhile news article in it!
Its a fact of life, the 20/80 factor, Pareto Principle or what ever you want to call it -" LIFE IS NOT FAIR"
Simon- thats life, instead of whinging about it, do something positive about it.Pay an agent , go on the telly, get Richard + Judy, Lorraine Kelly to interview you or something, promoting your books instead of crying "NOT FAIR".
WHS can stock what they like as far as Im concerned. Its their company and they pay the rent.
  • I'm still waiting for why the original poster hasn't removed his books from sale via WHSmith - if he believes so passionately in the boycott, why is he still taking their money?

There's nothing like being a hypocrite when money is concerned.
    From Poland...with love.

    They are (they're)
    sitting on the floor.
    Their
books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.

I don't understand what the issue is - if WH Smith want to sell books then that's their business.

However, the person responsible for the layout of their shops should be sacked!

The bottom line remains that this deal is bad for the consumer and bad for the publishing industry.

The bottom line is that you expect me, and other users of MSE, to boycott WHSmith, but you are happy to continue to let them sell your book?

Perhaps if all the publishers unhappy with this deal boycott WHS then there won't be any need for the public to because all they will stock will be Penguin books anyway......

Oh no wait, thats the scenario you are trying to avoid.
