    This PFA [Pulverised Fuel Ash] used to go up and out of the chimney, the risk from it was negligible due to the dilution of the natural environment.
    I'm not so sure about that - remember acid rain? ;)

    Solar heating of domestic hot water works! wind turbine generated electricity works! the trouble is that it costs far too much to install.

    If the Government were serious about alternative energy for domestic users;

    Firstly they should offer some realistic subsidies.

    Secondly they should step in quickly and regulate the alternative industry by stopping them making outrageous claims and charging a gullible public crazy installation prices
    And thirdly, they would offer grants to DIYers!

    I did a DIY course organised by our local council

    Details can be found here:
    http://www.broadland.gov.uk/environment/993.asp
    The cost was £1600 and my time basically - as I am on oil - it is estimated to get my money back in 6-7 years...

    Also the fact I have installed it myself - i can maintain it myself (if required) so no external costs.
    I you don't feel up to installing yourself - Lee who did the course in corporation with the council does the installations full-time.
    His website is here: http://www.norfolksolar.co.uk/

    So it is feasible to install yourself - which works out cheaper than getting a "cowboy" company and getting the government grant.
    Give somebody a hug it costs nothing

    We've been toying with the idea of installing these...haven't got round to costing them out or anything yet...but feel very intrigued by the idea and have noticed a growing number of houses who have them installed (mental note to stop looking at house roof's when driving!! :eek: ) just wondered if anyone on here has had them installed or can think of any good/bad points about the idea
    They're a great idea. So great in fact that when I researched them a couple of years ago the total cost was ~£8.5k and the grant available from Government, who just so want you to go green.....? £600! So, not something that's going to take off hugely until either the retail price plummets (no chance - business is business) or Government come to mean green, not just speak green. I'm not holding my breath.
