Hi savemoney, my final comment wasn't directed at you; just the general feeling that Windows 7 is a big improvement over Vista.

Vista isn't awful. As I said before, it's mediocre. It's alright. It's adequate. But Windows 7 is just as mediocre, alright, and adequate.

What features would make windows the 'ultimate' operating system then in your eyes then?

Desk top has XP lappy has Vista.

Vista is prettier, nice clock, but both have the usual MS bugs....I suppose because XP is taking less space it probably is better, but......

    haha yes:rolleyes:

its not as if all these mac osx updates offer anything more than minor gui updates etc

granted windows 7 isnt the biggest of changes but its windows... its a recognisable, safe(in the manner of being not a risky venture) os that is slowly being improved

and these benchmarks dont show the whole story

windows 7 IS faster to use due to its allocation of memory to all running processes and alot of reviews etc mention this point

    boot times tell another story

my machine boots 30 seconds faster with lots of stuff on it in win 7 than an empty vista
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

I don't think there's such a thing as the "ultimate operating system". But there are many things that I want in an OS. For instance, having to use installers sucks. I hate it when Adobe or Microsoft write a Mac application that makes me use an installer. I just want to drag the app wherever I want it, and delete it when I want to uninstall it. I want to be able to open and save PDF files without having to download Acrobat or some other program. I want to be able to use my camera's RAW files without having to install anything. I want a built in scripting language for automating tasks. I want a built in spell checker, dictionary, and thesaurus. I want a native audio plug-in architecture. I want it to be really easy to use, and I want it to be fast.

If I were to buy a computer, I would want a full version of a 64 bit OS as standard. I don't want a lite version of a 32 bit OS. I'd like my OS to be designed by someone who is familiar with the phrase "human interface design". A company that designs an OS that requires you to click "start" in order to stop it, is not.

hmm, so there seems to be a bit of disagrement on the merits of Vista!

Wha sort of spec would you recommend is needed for a home laptop, to cope with the issues raised?

Well, among other things, 10.4 changed the entire OS to the Intel platform, added spotlight instant search, the Dashboard, and introduced Boot Camp, which allowed users to dual boot with Windows.

10.5 changed it to be universal (so it could run on either PowerPC or Intel processors), introduced multiple desktops, automated incremental backup, and quick look (for viewing files without having to open them).

10.6 will introduce Grand Central, for improving multicore performance, OpenCL, which will allow the exectution of tasks across CPUs and GPUs, QuickTime X, Microsoft Exchange support, and support for up to 16,000 GB of RAM.

A 64 bit version of Vista with 4GB+ of 800MHz and above ram. For a laptop your looking for Intel processor.

I'm waiting for Snow Leopard before I go out buying a new computer ^.^
