How compatible is Vista?

Vista ultimate on my work PC is extremely quick, even with 2gb ram and a load of background services running like SQL server (used as a development machine). Only issues arise from poor drivers (not the fault of MS).
Yet to try out windows 7 properly, but if it as much of an improvement as suggested by all the respected and non biased techies on the net, then apple fan boys might need to dream up some new ammunition.0 -
I am using Vista ultimate 64bit on a quad core 2.4, 4gb of ram (800 mhz) it flys when its on but bootup is a pain. I tried the usually suspect register clean, defragging it, and defragging hd its some issue with Intel chipset
Yet is fine on a slightly slower pc we have which has 4gb ram0 -
If you buy him a brand new vista laptop the chances are he will be able to "downgrade" to XP anyway...
XP is about £63 for home edition, and even then you'll have to make sure your hardware has the drivers for XP...
You might want to hold onto your cash and wait for Windows 7Vista's Okay now though
Justification of your opinion ? Anecdotal evidence ? Other quirky one liners ? Would be helpful if you explained what you meant by this.
LOL! You obviously can't see his avatar.Marty J doesn't need to justify himself though, everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

I've had it installed on my Mac. It's no big deal. If you think it's going to be some sort of revolutionary update to Vista, you're going to be really disappointed.0 -
I find driver support great, both mys erver and laptop have windows 7 and didnt need any additional drivers all hardware was support although I did update graphics card0

It looks similar but I believe it handles things differently in terms of how programs use resources, it does seem to run much smoother in my versionI've had it installed on my Mac. It's no big deal. As mentioned there is nothing wrong with Vista and its problems arre more due to peoples views of it than anything else.
This is why Windows 7 is so early, it would have been a service pack to Vista but due to the mis-information going about with Vista it needed a new name... Windows 7Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

So I've heard. Most benchmarks I've seen show tiny performance gains (if they show any at all).
It's just a rebranding exercise. Vista was bad news for Microsoft which, rightly or wrongly, brought the company a lot of bad press. It doesn't really matter if they manage to patch it up to be the best OS ever; it'll still be called Vista. So, make some pretty minor changes, call it Windows 7, and you're done.
And I thought us Apple fanboys were supposed to be the ones blinded by marketing. :rolleyes:0 -
I am not blinded by marketing I downloaded it to test, from test version build 7100 x64 it runs much better than vista64 on another two pcs and a laptop which has vista x32 bit and pc is much slower than the version I have with Vista x64, I tend to try it before making my mind
I wasnt a fan of vista when it came out having used beta versions before hand in fact I removed it initially on my Dell laptop for XP but then went back to vista some 12 months or so later when sp1 came out
I took it off at weekend as I was getting issues and no use windows 7 abet not much software on at mo due to just installing it but it seems fine and much quicker to boot up that VistaSo I've heard. Most benchmarks I've seen show tiny performance gains (if they show any at all).
