Central Locking problems

Hi,

I bought a Ford Mondeo at the start of May. It is not a new Mondeo - its a 2002 model.

Yesterday the remote control central locking stopped working, so I replaced the battery in the remote control key fob but still no joy :-(

I have checked the 3 month car warranty but it does not cover the remote control central locking, therefore do you think I can go back to the garage and ask them to fix it?

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Regards

Paul

    Hi,

Sorry - not been too clear - the central locking works when I use the key in the drivers door - its just the remote key fob that does not seem to be working.

I have replaced the battery - but its still not working!

It sounds like you need to re-programme the key.

Check the manual on how to do this, or if you don't have one, the following may work:

    1. Obtain all keys fitted with remote control
    2. Turn ignition key from posistion 0 to position II and back four times within 6 seconds .
    3. Turn ignition switch to posistion 0
    4. The system should emit an acoustic signal to indicate start of programming mode.

    5. Programming mode activated for 10 seconds proceed as follows :
5a. Press and hold lock, unlock or boot release button
5b. Wait for acoustic signal (indicates correct programming)
5c. Repeat above procedure within 10 seconds to program remaining keys

    To exit programming mode:
    6. Turn key to posistion III or wait ten seconds

A maximum of 4 keys can be programmed I think

Agreed - it sounds like the key has forgotten which car it is supposed to talk to. I had to go through that saga when I replaced the button cells in my Focus key.

    Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions - I tried the steps above as well as the steps in the owners manual - but no joy!

Also this morning the problem has become worse - I have been using the ignition key to lock/unlock the car and that has been fine, but this morning it is only unlocking all the doors intermitantly.

Some times it will only luck/unlock the drivers door and the other times it will lock/unlock all the doors!

Also I noticed about 2 weeks ago that the doors used to lock on their own when I was drving. The speed varied but they used to lock - but they dont now!

    Any ideas?

    Regards

This may sound like a strange question - but bear with me...

Is your dashboard behaving? Lights, dials etc.

This happens on my 98 Mondeo diesel everytime I change the keyfob battery.(I`ve had the car for over 10 years so have had to change the keyfob battery several times)

The solution is to disconnect the Central Locking fuse or battery for 5 minutes...then replace .

It works for me every time.

(This is one of the solutions used by your local Ford Garage...for a cost of £50 plus VAT !)

Make sure you have the car radio code if you disconnect the actual battery.

(ask on the "Unlocking" sticky on this forum if you do not have the code)

    Hi,

I have disconnected the battery for the car (had radio code) and this has made no difference.

All the dials seem to be working fine.

I have been doing some research and from what I can see it could be the GEM unit!

    Any ideas?

You do realise that you can program the central locking/key to unlock JUST the drivers door or the whole car?

you can also set the doors to lock as you drive off too.

Also, with Ford keys, you only get about 11 seconds to replace the battery once you take the old one out.

Have you got a multimeter to test the voltage of the old battery against the new one?

All sounds like something that can be fixed i na few minutes.

Ignition on, hold the lock button down on the key until you either hear a beep or the hazzard lights flash twice. This is the setting to change the central locking from unlocking the drivers door only, to unlocking the whole car.
