Glad to make you feel good!
Managed to bite into a tomato today, the juice hit my mouth and I had to get rid of it. Maybe one day eh!

i have a nearly 2year son and i have always struggled to get him to eat fruit/veg.

he will not touch even the basics like bananas/thinly sliced apples, used to enjoy clementines but has become fussy with them. He enjoys grapes, and that's pretty much it...oh and loves raisins. anything new i try he just spits it out. doesn't like brocolli, only likes carrots if they are shredded.

he likes meals consisting of sweetcorn/peas/potatoes with chicken/meat diet included, likes pasta, loves lasagne, and enjoys curries, he is a fairly good eater...except is fruit intake is concerning me.

both dh and i do try to eat fruit in front of him, apples, bananas, pineapple, strawberries, but to no avail.

    aagghh.

    any suggestions??

Don't worry and panic, children can get faddy with their foods mine did, by the time he went to school and saw what the other children were eating, he soon had a go and tucked in

I have two boys - one 5 one 3. Both can be funny about veg and the youngest has been a nightmare with eating enough since he was weaned.
My health visitor made a good suggestion. As his meat intake was as bad as his veg/fruit she suggested that a supplement called 'Minadex' would be a good idea. It has multi vits BUT also has IRON which none of the others do. She mentioned that low Iron levels affect appetite and could affect brain development in long term conditions.
You buy it in supermarkets and my mum says that she had it was she was little - it's been around a while.
I also went against all my values and hide veg. in pasta sauces etc. I use a manual nifty chopper thingy that I bought from a 'pampered chef' night. It is fab and again my mum went down memory lane about having one years ago. It chops veg small but not mushy with big lumps like my food processor sometimes does and I sit witha smug face as both kids eat sauce with broccoli, mushrooms, courgette etc in it. If they knew there would be no chance. Makes me feel good.
There was also some work done that if you can get someone to eat something a certain number of times they get to like it. Can't remember the amount but was shown on TV with a young lad and avocado!

  • thank you so much everyone for your replies, it's put my mind at rest!!

i hadn't actually thought to try making smoothies but will def see if they make any difference..and will make more of an effort to 'hide' fruit and veg in his main meals.

he had his first dentist appointment yesterday and am very chuffed that his teeth are perfect hehe

    Hi,

It's not just my little 'un then - phew!! My 2 year old refuses to eat practically everything but she will drink an Innocent smoothie every day which are packed full of fruit. Costs me a fortune because she refuses all other brands and homemade ones but it keeps my sanity!

I just sit her at the table every day with her dinner and prey that one day she might actually eat it! I still give her formula milk (C&G Complete care 1+) to drink because that is fortified with vitamins and iron. She will eat fromage frais and a few other bits and pieces but she really is so picky. She had a lot of tonsilitis at the stage of weaning when you move them on from smooth to lumpy and her throat was so sore, sometimes I wonder whether that put her off eating as that's when it all went wrong.

Could just be in her nature though - apparantly I made my mum cry on more than one occasion with my refusal to eat. Something that she likes to bring up on a regular basis!!

Good luck with it all. I'm sure he'll be fine - my health visitor kept telling me that no child will starve itself! xx
