Contents only insurance - why will companies not quote online when property is old?

I've just tried Direct Line and moneysupermarket to get a quote for contents-only insurance. I live in a private rented house that happens to have been built in the 1600's. Why, oh why, oh why, won't they quote for contents-only insurance omline? It seem to me that their systems are only meant for B&C ins and nothing else.
Why would they care about the age of the house when I only want Contents insurance? If the house needs repair or falls down or something then my landlady's insurance has to pay!!!
Having stood upright for about 400 years I suspect 'my' cottage will still be standing long after a lot of modern houses are dust.
This situation makes a mockery of price comparison websites!

I have to agree with you. I find it impossible to get more than a handful of quotes for our 1700s cottage - buildings or contents.
Last year I was able to use all the comparison sites and quidco to get a great deal. This year of the few who would quote nobody could beat my renewal. Maybe things will improve as the economy does too?0 -
Whether it's car insurance, life insurance or house insurance most comparison sites are designed to deal with only the most standard applications. If you drive a fast car, have complicated finances or live in an old house then you will not generally fit with their business model. They are built to handle large volumes of straightforward business with as little client contact as possible - staff cost money - online forms don't!
Unfortunately that's the nature of the beast. If you have specialist needs you are usually better off going to s specialist adviser or broker with knowledge specific to your need....I am a Financial Adviser specialising in Mortgages, Protection, Health and Medical Insurance. I also write wills. All information posted on this site is for discussion only, and should not be taken as advice.0
