I recieved a call today(unknown) I Aanswered the phone and it was a recorded message saying "I have been awarded a vacation to take advantage press 9 " I enter a lot of competitions online so I was curious and I pressed 9, a voice (American accent, I am in the UK) replied and said I have been awarded a vacation at one of their resorts.
I asked the operator how did you get my number and she said that you must have had taken a holiday in the last 2 years to one of their resorts. I haven't been on holiday for 3 YEARS!.
I smelt a rat and put the phone down.
I gather this is a scam BUT can I be charged a huge amount per min on my phone bill for just replieing by pressing 9 on my kaypad??
As far as I am aware the maximum you can be charged in the UK is £1.50 a min , But this is dialled from abroad and I have heard stories that people have been charged £20 a min for replieing to these calls.
Is this true? Have I been conned? If so is there anything I can do?
Any good advice would be grateful as I'm starting to get a little worried about this
    Thanks Chris

    Huxdug,

If you type the words "PO Box 1010 Liverpool" into google search you come up with many sites giving you information about this well known type of fraud using the words "National Lottery".

Here is just one of them:

I've just received a letter from them, guaranteeing me 2 cheques for £9,000. This letter went on for about 5 pages, and each page said that all I had to do was reply with my special code, I didn't have to order anything, (however, if I did, my cheques would arrive about 3 months earlier than if I didn't) and they would definitely send me my cheques. It is only when I checked the fine print (which was on the back of one of these pages) that it states that actually my special code is only to enter me into a draw and they are under no obligation to pay me any money.
