Replacing Car Air Filter

I called Halfords who quoted £13.75 for a halfords brand, but Nissan do a Genuine part for £12.73
Wouldn't have expected a dealer to be cheaper than halfords... :rotfl: Just being curious, I asked Nissan how much to fit and was told about 30mins labour at around £30. It's not going to take 30 mins to change an air filter is it?? 0 -
No, do it yourself in 10 minutes.Happy chappy0

Yeah will do, I was just a little curious as to why it would take the "experts" 30 mins to do it. Do I need any glue/adhesive for the new filter or does it literally just plonk in place? And removing the old one, simply a case of lifting it out of place??
I'm just a tad nervous having never done this job before

Find the air filter box. It usually has 3-4 clips to hold it together. Unclip these. The filter just pulls out. It's normally held in place by being sandwiched between the two halves of the box. Easy job.
Garages just quote a number, dealer servicing is a money maker.
I say all this assuming that your car is like 99% of the others out there with an easily accesible air box.Happy chappy0 -
Yeah I took a look - there are 7 clips around the rectangular box, unclipped those and saw the air filter inside, but didn't dare try to move ittomstickland wrote:Find the air filter box. . It makes sense that it's sandwiched between the cover, so I'll go one further and actually remove it once I get the new one. Don't know why I'm fretting so much - I was like this when I first attempted the spark plugs, which incidentally are approaching 12 months but I personally don't think they need doing as they are the Bosch premium ones so I'll leave them in a bit longer, as the car has only done around 6k mileage since 12 months ago. 0 -
Like Triggermike, I sold Blue print stuff, in a motor factors. It is good quality, If you have a Partco or similar nearby try them for a price ... usually cheaper than Halfords. I would suggest investing a few quid in a Haynes manual (about £15 ish)from Halfords. It shows step by step how to do routine maintanance like oil/air filter changes as well as more complex jobs.Every day above ground is a good day.0

and some extra advice, once you ahve replaced it take it out every 6 months or so and bang it a wall or similar to clean the bulk of the dust out. for average mileage use change once a year for lower milage use less frequentlyIf it doesnt pay rent sell it.

Just took a look at the air filter before I went to buy a new one but it doesn't look too bad - I was expecting it to be a thick black colour as it hasn't been renewed in two years, but it doesn't seem too bad. I gave the casing and where the filter sits a good clean and picked a lot of dust and dirt up. What do you think of the filter, do you reckon it needs replacing just yet?

Cheers :T
