Best student account at the moment?

Hey guys

I'm going to uni in sept and are now after a student account with perks etc.

Are there any that offer gadget insurance cheap? I have a laptop, mp3 player, phone etc. which i'd rather not break or lose without some form of cover.

The deals won't be announced for another month or so.

HSBC have already announced theirs, NatWest offers are already online but their offers are open to new students from Tomorrow. (I have a guide ready to go but will ask MSE Natasha first prior to posting).
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

Wait until mid / late July to get the best range of offers from all providers.

I'd wait until August before choosing a bank account. That's when the offers will be out and about.

As for gadget insurance, students often find that their gear is actually covered on their parents' contents policy anyway. If not, extending the policy to include student belongings can often be the cheapest way of doing it.

Get Dad to make a phone call on that one!

Does this usually cover something like a mobile phone which belonged to the student and was stolen from a gym, away from home?

Often it will. If you can say that the student's permanent (i.e. non-term-time) address is the parents' address, then many belongings will be covered, depending on the policy.

I had nearly everything covered, including a £350 bicycle, under my parents' contents insurance, except a musical instrument, where they had to pay an extra £12 per year for cover away from home.

When DS applied for a student bank account in September 2007, the bank required sight of his university offer.

DS's belongings are covered by my own contents policy, and I pay an additional premium because they are away from the house. His laptop was fairly pricey and this is a separately named item.

When in Halls of Residence, whilst living in a shared flat, you will always have a lock on your bedroom door. When DS moved to a house in September 2008, the bedrooms did not have locks on them. When I checked with the insurance company, they said that in the event of a break-in, if my son's possessions were not in his own locked room, he would not be covered. The landlord agreed to put locks on all the bedroom doors.
