Hey Murphy! Glad you had such a good time in Texas.
It's good to know there's things to do. I'm off to Texas in 3 weeks to visit some family in a small town called Uvalde which is about 70miles West of San Antonio! Anything you could tell me about that area would be fantastic. I have a few things planned (Alamo, trip to the cowboy town of Bandera, Six Flags, the caverns)

Also, with regards to car hire... we have that booked but wondered about the insurance side of things. Do we need anything more than what we got with the car??

We stayed in San Antonio, so most of the things that we did around there were fairly close to the place -- off the top of my head, Mrs Cat abused the credit card at the Tanger outlet mall , the River Walk in San Antonio is really nice (iirc, an all day, hop on, hop off canal ticket is $15 -- if its hot, its worth it ;)), the Tower Of The Americas was well worth it (& make sure that you visit the 4D cinema), The Alamo, as you mentioned (gee, I thought that it would be bigger than that :D), the Spaghetti Warehouse was a fun place to eat, you might consider the Canyon Trail chuckwagon for something a bit different, but not if you're going to have to drive a long way. The Magic Time Machine restaurant was good fun - our dearest meal, but our most memorable. Gruene, was simply a nice place to go to ! Avoid the Mirror Maze across the road from the Alamo, it was the only thing that we felt was (very) bad value for money from our trip.
The best value tickets I could get for Six Flags Fiesta were for pre-booking online and they cost $34.99, but I see that they are now doing a $29.99 offer (vaild until the end of May), or a season long pass for $49.99. If you enjoy your theme parks, the season long one sounds good value as it covers all of the Six Flags places. Parking was $15.

as for your car / insurance -- IIRC, as long as you've hired it from this end, you'll be comprehensively insured - things like windscreen cover, excess cover are options that only you can decide are worthwhile. For what its worth, I'd suggest that you hire a big luxurious car - Texas is huge an you can easily rack up some big miles :j

Have fun and let us all know how you get on

Oh bananas, I'd forgotten on of the nice things that we did in San Antonio - The Japanese Tea Gardens are a little piece of tranquility, nestling in the bustling city of San Antonio. Entry and parking is free (always a welcoming feature), plus, its an easy walk from their to the San Antonio Zoo (if thats your thing), or to take the narrow gauge train around Brackenridge Park, & stop off at the Witte Museum (if thats your thing - if it is, we liked it !)

Yes I know this thread is a bit old ;) but I'm researching the texas Triangle for our Xmas 9 day trip.

Got a lot of info already about the area and hotels are booked.

    Question.

I'm looking to buy a GPS to use for this trip and next years Arizona

Any recommened ones I should buy or just get the cheapest from Walmart
This Tom Tom Ease at $59 looks like my Tom Tom "Start" version

I'm also considering buying a cheap PAYG mobile which I can use for emergencies this trip and Arizon in June 2012.

    Again-any recomendations from Walmart?

    Thanks

    MTC
