Most of my allotment has been nibbled down to the stalks but the beans in plastic drinks bottle cloches are still ok

Rabbits could be to blame :(

I think they may be made of lead & contained in 12 bore cartridges :rotfl:

thanks for all your replies. I have another real good look at the beans, and its slugs/snails -found a slime trail on one of the stalks. So will be trying the copper idea and then plant the new ones.

What has eaten every single leaf of what were my beautiful 2ft high runner bean plants? and what do I do to prevent it happening again - I've just bought some more - decided it would be quicker than waiting to grow from seed.
    my neighbour suggested snails.
The plants are still trying to grow - there is one tiny leaf on the very top of one plant

I've had this, too  I don't think it's snails, as the plants were about 15cm tall when I plantyed them.

DH and I are convinced it's pigeons, so a 12-bore is the answer :D

I did think about pigeons, but on closer inspection found slime on one of the stalks - could be both though. I haven't planted my others out yet - I want to make sure they are not going to get eaten again, as I love runner beans.

The real way to get rid of these guys is to encourage Song Thrushes to nest in the locality!
low lying ,thick bushes, bird tables with scraps and occaisionally digging over wet ground and laying a largish stone inthe corner away from predators, so they can break the shells of snails !. HTH

Out of interest, if you guys find any in your garden... as I do from time to time. What do you do with them? Do you kill them, and if so how? I'm not particularly squeamish, but I'm conscious of not causing too much suffering, even if it is my current mortal enemy!

    Pigeons or slugs and snails?:rotfl:
The latter I throw over the hedge into the road. I figure if they survive then they deserve to make their way back into the garden.:rotfl:
  • Having had 3 beans eaten by slugs and snails I've resorted to putting salt around the base of my pot that my beans are in. Thats worked!
