thank you all, It was the council who wrote the letter saying they visited my property and as there was no answer they contacted the police who gained access to your property through the front door.

I cannot understand if I have three keys how they have a fourth. I always thought there were only ever 3 keys per lock. The only thing I can think is how did they get a fourth unless someone had it cut (WITHOUT MY PERMISSION) I should be the only one with a key (obviously not). I have not given anyone a key, if I did it would be a family member

As for calling the police, if they went through all my things whats the point, they are hardly going to put theirs hands up to it and say they had a good old rumage, although I would like to hear their explanation as to this box they dragged in full of my paper work.

I have since had a further look for my passport just to make sure although i know where it was. I just dont understand it. I am going to have a real good final look tomorrow to see if I can make out what else has gone

You've not made it clear how entry was made-by the police or the mysterious passport thief. Was it forced entry or did they simply use a duplicate key?

Ok sorry entry as it says in the letter was made by the police through the front door. There is no sign of forced entry as I therefore assume there has to be a duplicate or 4th key held by? that i do not know as yet.

why they had to enter i do not know. by looking through windows and front door you would be able to see if anyone was here on the floor etc etc

why bring my paperwork in from outside dump it in the hall way and go through it, this i know because originallt there were phone bills on top

I have now had a good look and there are other items missing one being an important licence (not driving) so I will have to phone them and see whats going on

The police would simply use a skeleton key or slip the catch maybe, I don't think one lock would present much of a problem to them. So really there is no evidence of an additional key being used.
However for your own peace of mind why don't you just change the lock anyway? And speak to the police to ask them the details. No-one can speculate as to what happened.
It sounds more likely to me that the premises wer left unsecured and someone else removed your documents.

thank you macman I agree that I should/will definately change the lock but are you saying that even if i do that they could gain entry just like that.

as for the rest they should NOT have left the property unsecured, but then my jewelry is still here

    Phone call I think

No it was closed and it is a yale lock I put my key in to get in. I was just refering to macmans last sentence

"It sounds more likely to me that the premises wer left unsecured and someone else removed your documents."

    Possible I suppose??

I have just got off the phone with the police. They did attend as there is a log. The pc who attended will not be on until 22hr, and i have asked for her to call me

I meant that was it possible that the premises were left unsecured after the police gained entry, not before. Then someone else took those items
But given that your jewellery was not taken, it seems very unlikely.
NB: if you are just using a single Yale then don't be surprised that someone can easily get in. A Yale can be slipped in seconds. The very least you need on a door is a Yale and a 5 lever deadlock, you should uprate it ASAP.
Apart from anything else, your insurers may not pay out if the locks do not meet minimum standards-and a single nightlatch certainly will not.

well i got that one wrong just opened door lifted handle and out popped all the bolts/locks. my next question are these types of locks easy to change as it looks like the entire strip on the inside of the door needs to be removed unlike the older type where it is just a little section around the lock. Also it is not a yale lock but a SEO and do I need to replace like for like

When I left i only shut the door and did not pull up the handle and dead lock it. more the idiot me!
