I moved into this property 11 weeks ago and was given three keys. At that time I remember saying "this is all the keys yeh?" of course was the reply.

So! how is this possible. I went away for a couple of days and when I got back and opened the door the first thing that caught my attention was. How did this box that was outside full of papers get in the hallway. Then I thought "no! maybe I got it in before I left. Then I went into the bedroom and a couple of drawers were wide open and it looked like some of my private docs along with my passport was no longer in it. I then thought I am sure that I did not leave them open! in fact every where I went it seemed things were disturbed.

Today I received a letter in the post saying that there was concern that something had happened to me and so the police were contacted and entry via front door was made (I have a carer daily due to spinal surgery and stroke) they said they came and could not get an answer ALTHOUGH I TOLD THEM I WOULD NOT BE THERE FOR 3 DAYS IN FACT SO DID ANOTHER PERSON. I used my key so the locks have not been changed therefore only conclusion is that someone else has a key to my place of residence without my consent is this legal????:mad: does anyone know whether it is legal for there to be an extra key held by the local authority????

Why don't you ring whoever sent you the letter and ask them how they got in? Using their key to their property is my best guess. And maybe thank them for looking out for you.

It was the local authority who sent the letter and while yes it was nice someone was looking out for me, how would you feel if they had you house keys made entrance and went through you things (after all I wasnt in a drawer!!) Also they knew I was not going to be there, plus I was on the other end of a mobile number of which they have.

It was the front door, ie the front door, the only door and the door to which I have be led to believe that I had all the keys

Why on earth would she thank them for apparently rifling through her possessions?

Change the lock barrel. I would always do this as a matter of course in a new property, as you have no way of knowing how many additional keys might be floating about.

plus you can keep the old one and swap back when you move
so no real cost as such

thank you loracan1 and macman. I will do that and change my locks, and this is my biggest point what on earth were they doing looking through my drawers and my private letters and rumaging around elsewhere. What has happened to my passport, I am sure it was in the drawer that was left open, in fact I could hardly close the drawer before, but come home to find it open and virtually empty.

Secondly I have been back 2 days and no one has turned up. I get a call today saying that the carer called yesterday and today and did not get a reply, these were knew people and got the wrong address, so why didnt they do the same again. I SMELL A RAT

    So who has your passport?

A very good question, and I am not sure what to do. Over this last year I have gone from being a very strong person to hmm well sadly frightened of my own shadow.

You need to report it as stolen to the police - show them the letter you received from the local authority.

Add an extra lock. Only give the person you want access a copy.

report passport stolen. (do you have to tell passport office rather than police? or both?)

They shouldn't have a key. Ask who let them in - is it possible your carer did?
