Sorry, I wasn't very clear. That includes paying back the shortfall. We have been paying £82 per month for gas and electric, which seems to have been too low. The electric consumption doesn't seem excessive but 28,000 for gas did seem to be.

Just out of interest, how many kwh of electricity do you use a year?

I'm glad you asked me that, it made me knuckle down and work it out. The day time electric is 1846 kwh and the night time is 7808 kwh.

I don't know whether this is high or not. Our hob is gas but our oven is electric. We use the dishwasher at night every other day.

If you have gas,(which presumably you use for heating and HW???) how do you use so much electricity at night - and so little during the day? - are you sure you have't got those the wrong way round?

A dishwasher might use 2kWh, so that will account for only 360kWh.

I don't know. It is the right way round. We have got three computers that are on constantly, but that would affect both day and night consumption.

You know, I'm not sure that gas is responsible for your runaway bills. You use nearly twice as much electricity as us - almost 10,000kwh a year! I think the average is 3000-4000 - we use 5000kwh and I think of us as high users.

And assuming the lower number of kwh is for daytime, why do you have Econ 7? You are almost certainly paying more than you need to for the day time units.

That's incredibly high usage. Isn't the average 4600kwh in total (day and night) per year. We've got electric underfloor heating in the bathroom, a 10.5kw electric shower, dishwasher on every day, washing machine at least once a day (both dishwasher and washing machine are cold fill only so both heat the water they need), wife and two small children in all day, and we only use 6500kwh in total.

The reading on the 4th June 2008 was 3461 for day and 13703 for night, the bill was for 374 day units and 1577 night units.

The reading on 5th June, 2009 was 21511 for night and 5307 for day.

I am going by the meter readings for night units on the bill to find out which is night or day. E1 seems to be classed as night time on the bill, but it is increasing at the moment, which makes it look as though it's day time.

My elderly father lives with us and we have just found that he put the electric heater on in the barn to stop it from getting damp. There is furniture stored there. This could have been on for months.

I'm not sure what's going on but we are using a lot of electricity somewhere.

I suspect you are being charged the wrong way(night for day if you see what I mean!!) that will mean a huge bill if they discover!!

The average consumption in UK is a total of 3,300kWh a year(using gas for HW/heating)

Yes I've been wondering whether that is what is happening, but the consumption is still very high over all.
