    Prelude in the last????????????

Just noticed that Fireside has had some mighty tough engagements, only run 4 times, big race in Ireland on debut (unlucky) 2nd race won, 3rd race 2000 guineas and 4th race The Lincoln

and plenty more mugs who thought they had found the perfect system. Yet failed.

Some of your other comments were interesting. Particularly the hedging. The only problem with it is that if a bookie was offering 9/1. They wouldn't accept a bet of £100,000 at those odds. The odds would be agreed between the punter and the bookie irrespective of the current market rate.

You'd be surprised what a rails bookie would take on the Derby, and they would stand the board price odds usually - to be fair I think the price was 9/4 or so rather than 9s. Obviously a couple of bookies took £50K. But on most race meetings a few hundred down on a price will shift the odds south. You have to bear in mind that most track punters are on a couple of quid a bet.

Professionals don't use systems, they use maths and marginal advantages. There's no essential difference between financial speculation and gambling, and it's odd that people who would presumably have no qualms in investing in the stock market will earnestly explain that gambling is a one way ticket to the poorhouse.

At last we agree on something! That method is exactly what I use when purchasing my lottery ticket and choosing the numbers. Use the birthdays, my lucky number and the last two house numbers.

Science Julieq - me and you know where it's at. Couple of old pro's I reckon.

Hi Julieq, I think you might have missed my question earlier in this thread. I'd be really interested in any insight or tips you can give about making gambling pay. My GF and I have a decent enough combined income, but we're always looking for ways to increase it. I have been looking at the gambling loopholes board and might have a go at that, but if you have nuggets of info you can pass on I'll be really gratefull! :)

Well I wouldn't start by planting £100K on the second favourite in the Derby to move the market down, I have to say.

I'm the worlds worst gambler when I go racing, because I just do it for fun. I'm interested in risk and probability, but it's an academic rather than practical interest. I've met professionals though.

The gambling loopholes thing does work, I've tried that. I wouldn't honestly try to make money gambling in any other way unless you really know what you're doing and have a genuine edge.

I never bet anymore. When I was connected to racing I felt confident in some bets though. Based on horse, not maths. ;) the riskiest method I guess. :) Trouble is, you had to know the other horses too, and the courses, and then keep your fingers crossed. Now I've been out of the game so long I know very few horses running. I have some friends still in industry. If a horse I like with a trainer I'm chums with is running I might have a less hopeful flutter. I should learn maths really :)
