I'm lonely on here now since Cleaver left. Gen only has eyes for Mrs Gen, mewbie only has eyes for fungusand Cat's never about now. SamIam was just a ship passing in the night. My poor decimated list: the rest of you Coven girls are doing much better than I.
Last time this worked though:D: Mr Fonzerelli, where are you?
Hey lir, we'll share and share alike. All part of the sisterhood.
Had forgotten how many have left. New list looms.0 -

The greediest bookies are the ones for small stakes in the middle of the course with all the mug punters, they give bad odds and the day trippers are backing everything across the board, the rails bookies are on much tighter margins.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. Ok so sometimes bookmakers lose money on a particular event bigtime.
Take the Derby on Saturday, the favourite at the off. Was down to the fact that somebody on course placed 2 £50,000 bets with different bookmakers. The horse wasn't even placed.
Those book makers would have gone home happy.
Try and find an independant bookie shop, you'd be amazed how many have gone out of business. It's more usual to be a poor bookie than not in fact.
Anyway, there are all sorts of reasons why the £100K bets on the Derby may have benefited the person who placed it even though it lost.
First off, the effect of that much money going down on the course is to send the SP (starting price, which is determined on the course) down. Bookies therefore often place money on in large amounts on course to reduce liabilities.
Second, it's a trading gambit. You're putting 100K into a market of very low liquidity on course. Off course odds including at betting exchanges will follow. So you take a bet at whatever it was, 9/1, the course price collapses as the bookies run for cover, and you lay the bet off on an exchange a couple of points lower for a profit, say at 7 to 1. On a £100K bet that would mean a profit of 900K - 700K = 200K, or 25K if laid off for a profit win or lose. Nice little earner.
Bookmaking is a fascinating subject for anyone who wants to learn about risk and risk management. As I say, there are plenty of people making extremely good livings from gambling.0 -
