Royal Mail Attempted Theft

Hi,

Got a letter delivered this morning which was a card with a cheque for a substantial amount of money. Predictably it had been opened, clearly on purpose to assess whether there was any cash or item that would have been of value to whoever opened it. Since it was a cheque made out to my name it was left in the envelope so neither myself nor the writer of the cheque has suffered any loss.

I am however pretty !!!!ed off as this happens all the time to letters that look like they may have something of value (money, bank cards etc) inside.

I was intending to make a complaint to RM and the regulator however I doubt RM will care or it wouldn't be endemic within their organisation and I'm not sure what the regulator will do. Is this something that the police would investigate? Ideally I'd like to see some attempt at criminal prosecution against RM or whoever is responsible. Currently seems to me that RM have a license to steal as much as they want without any real prospect of having to face any consequences.

Thanks.

You need report it, then the royal mail investigations team will look into it.If it is happening in the sorting office then the delivery postman should not be delivering any mail unopened. It does not help making libellious comments based on a problem happening to you personally.

Quite simply - how on earth do you expect anything to be done if you don't complain about it or bring it to their attention.

At the end of the day, they will take a dim view as to what's been going on - if you'd complained earlier then perhaps it wouldn't have happened this time. If as you say, it has happened several times before, then an account of the dates would be extremely useful to them.

This happened to my mum, it was investigated and she has never experienced the same problem again.

To clarify - this has happened several times before and I have complained each time and they've never shown an interest or done anything about it. I even escalated it as far as writing a letter to Allan Leighton's office and speaking to somebody representing him (not 100% sure how senior they were but quite senior) and their attitude was 'prove it was our fault'.

This has happened to me at my last 3 addresses so I think it's fair to say I'm not an isolated case - unless there is somebody in RM who has a vendetta against me and targets letters with my name on!

Hold on. Is your allegation that you think the Royal Mail is singling you out to nick your cheques, or that it is endemic within their business?

I think you sound very paranoid.

I'm making a generalisation here but in my experience RM are far too deeply involved in the pc ethics of 'equality' and 'diversity' to make good decisions about which people they should be employing and which they shouldn't. For example, maybe through reasons of cost they are employing large numbers of recent arrivals from Eastern Europe and Asia but as far as I know they are unable to properly check their work history or possible criminal records.

All prospective employees for RM should undergo a mandatory CRB check but how do you perform that if the candidate has only recently arrived in the country? Any offences committed outside of this country won't show up on a PNC search. It's one thing to proudly display your 'equal opportunities' ideals but wholly another if it presents a security risk to your customers. Sorry if that's very un-PC but it makes sense to me.

The opening of obvious birthday cards seems to be fairly common - to the extent that a fair number of my friends and relatives now put cards etc inside manilla envelopes before sending. Sad but true.

    Agree with post above.

My AMEX bill was delivered open today. I got on with life and assumed the postman wasn't out to get me.

My 'allegation' is that it is endemic in their business, or at least my experience suggests it is (because it has happened at a number of different addresses). The other bit was a joke (I edited the syntax to hopefully make it more obvious)!

No, what would this acheive? All they would say is 'it was like that when I got it'.

I work full time plus live in a flat so would be hard for me to catch them, plus we have a number of different ones.
