Hi Pretani,
I know what you mean, it can be a little confusing all right..
It is incorrect to refer to Ireland as the "Irish Republic", since this was the name used from 21st January 1919 to 6th December 1922, for the entire island, as proclaimed in the Easter Rising on 24th April 1916 by the republican leaders.
It is incorrect to refer to Ireland as "Southern Ireland", since this was the name for Ireland as a constituent country of the United Kingdom (much like Northern Ireland today), as it was between 3th May 1921 and 6th December 1922.
It is incorrect to refer to Ireland as the "Irish Free State", since this was the name used following the Anglo-Irish Treaty, from 6th December 1922 and until the Constitution of Ireland on 29th December 1937.
It is incorrect to refer to Ireland as the "Republic of Ireland", since this is the description of the State and not the name.
The Constitution of Ireland states the following:- The name of the State in English is Ireland
- The name of the State in Irish is Éire
It is incorrect, when speaking English, to refer to Ireland as Éire, just as it is incorrect, when speaking English, to refer to Germany as Deutschland.
I used to send things to my GF's family with the address written in Gaelic,
An PÁDRAIG MÍCHEÁL Ó’CAOMHÁNACH

IRL
Got there just the same, IRL is the international postal country indicator for the Republic, Northern Ireland has NIR. Her mum and dad are sadly both dead now.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Northern Ireland has NIR.
Where did you get that information from?
United Kingdom Postal Codes/Zip Codes
Conventional short name: United KingdoM, Britain, UK
Conventional long name: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Location: Western Europe, the islands including the northern one-sixth of the island of Ireland between the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, northwest of France

Daylight Savings Time: BST (UTC+1)
Currency: Pound sterling (£) (GBP)0 -
Royal Mail international post section, why? It's really used for ID'ing mailsacks rather than letters though.
It's an international postal country indicator not a postcode though, Is NI a country? Scotland is, England is and so is Wales so I always assumed NI is as well. If it is a country why should it not have an indicator. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

They seem to be used here as well, so not unique to postage.

Still the same to me, even after I cleared the cache. Just a thought, does this page market to Americans, in which case just be thankful they haven't used illustrations from Darby O'Gill and the Little People.

You're quite right, it has. But it stands for Northern Ireland Railways!
We don't actually have an official country identifier though, neither does England, Scotland or Wales. GB is the only official one for the UK.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

Really so the links in my posts are wrong then, better get on to them straight away before someone gets hurt
Edited to add it makes more sense if read what else I posted, they are actualy country indicators for the bags being airfreghted rather than individual mail, but Royal Mail sorters tend to know them anyway so I use it as belt and braces. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head.
