That number is charged at 10ppm from a BT line. It is used by JustDial for when you are calling some international country or something?

Have you been dialling Aruba, Antigua, or somewhere?

If so, I would seriously recommend checking Martin's International CallChecker here.

0871 xxxxxx is a non -geographical number. The free call offer excludes calls,to non geographical numbers.

    Edit 29 March -

A couple of days ago I noticed that the display of rates on Just-Dial instants webpage was incorrect - the wrong tariff value was inserted and mobiles were shown at the same rates as the same country's landlines

Just-Dial have now corrected this, so I've deleted most of this post lest people worry that it is still wrong. .

    [...]
That is the parent site, but the OP has used an affiliate's number which may or may not use the same corrupt database

[...] This is either a database error or [...]; I suspect the former but it really isn't satisfactory at all, and may have misled people into incurring higher call charges than they expected
    [...]
If the OP has dialled these numbers, I suggest a complaint be made about misleading tariffs. What is alarming though is the remark that he/she doesn't recognise the number.

According to http://www.downloads.bt.com/pricing/SpecialisedNos.pdf, BT's prices are:

    German mobile - call 0905 257 0000 .... 20p per minute (not 3p/minute)
    Czech mobile -- call 0905 306 0000 .... 15p per minute (not 3p/minute)
    Australian mob . call 0871 570 0000 .... 10p per minute (not 5p/minute)

Dem Rep of Congo landline - call 0905 474 0000 25p per minute (correct)
Dem Rep of Congo mobile -- call 0905 257 0000 20p per minute (not 25p/minute)
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • just to clarify...... we have been making a number of local calls and national calls........ never to 0845 or 0870 numbers..... and never/ever overseas.
These should be free, but the number showing on the just-dial bill is almost always 08715702898.......... a number I don't recognise.... and I certainlt didn't dial it

I've also noticed that some of the dates are mid-week....... but my Orchid dialler is set to dial call 18866 during the week........... curiouser and curiouser

The number 08715702898 belongs to the Just-Dial group,so they must have a prob with their billing system, which doesnt surprise me.

If you are making a lot of geographical (those numbers beginning 01 or 02) then MSE Martin now recommends using Primus because JustDial are eventually to be swallowed up by TalkTalk and JustDial (like OneTel have) may start increasing their prices and/or changing the t&c without informing you.

If you sign-up to Primus before the end of this month then you can actually get paid for being on their free evening & weekend package, or alternatively, go for their all inclusive (for geographical calls anyhow) package for only £3.49per month. See this thread for more info but hurry!

Yep - I know all those. I think that it isn't a database error, so much as the coding in their webpage is wrong and has duplicated the landline rate into the mobile box.

I've sent Just-Dial an email and phoned Ofcom and ICSTIS.

This is a bit off-topic for the OP's problem though, which sounds pretty odd to me, unless there is something in the Orchid dialler settings for some numbers - or is there something like a Sky subscription that some unscrupulous git has changed the dial-up number for?

I'd talk to J-D and ask about their affiliate. The last four digits will indicate to them who it is; eg usually 0000 for them directly

About the website issue I mentioned.

Just-Dial emailed me this morning - the website is now correct.
  • My problem of overcharging by Just-dial is still not resolved..... I emailed them 2 days ago and was told "reply in 2 days".............. still nothing
The problem goes back to January and the total overcharge so far is £45
