I'm not suprised, I just don't want to mess up and get a new power supply which still isn't right for it.

If you go to buy a universal from an independent shop, they will usually let you try one to make sure it's OK before buying. There are only two variables-1) the jack size (the universals come with 8 or 9 adaptors, so it's about 95% likely that one will fit yours. 2) the voltage, which you simply dial in to match your lappy's requirement.

Dell laptop's can detect whether the power supply is genuine or not.
In the same way that Sony Erricson mobile phones cat detect when you use a genuine phone charger. If you own a Sony Erricson phone, you'll know what I mean by "Optimized Charging".
I think it's a load of rubbish and just there to make more money, but it does cause lower performance.

You must have had a busy day lol
Anyway I'm with damo24, a universal power supply is fine and cheaper.

Yes lol, a rather busy day!
I could go back and edit my post, but it's even made me laugh :rotfl:

I got a Sony Erricson mobile phone charger from Amazon that is a knock off and it still does optimised charging, I tend to just recharge of my pc in work though using the usb lead.

NO, if it was lower it would matter but as it is higher it's not important. It can't put in more power to your lappie unless the voltage is too high anyway.

    Charger? what?

They're not chargers, they're power supplies....

I would hope that you don't use it as a "charger".

The battery should only really be used when you have no mains power available.

edit - If it's running slow on battery power, it's because new laptops cut the CPU speed to save power when running on batteries.

You should also disconnect from the power supply when not using it, as keeping it on all the time will cut battery life drastically after a while, some laptops automatically disconnect themselves after detecting full charge and mains power for a certain time, When I got one that did it I thought something was wrong for ages until I worked it out.
