Trying to buy a replacement power supply

Hi, can anyone help me. We are trying to find a replacement charger for a Dell Studio 1537 laptop. Somehow, we've lost the charger! The genuine one from Dell (http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&sku=450-10685&mfgpid=1616352) is £56, there seem to be a couple of Dell chargers on ebay, but how do we know if they're the right one?

Even better can anyone recomend anywhere we could get one cheaper?

It needs to be the right one as we have an old Dell charger powering it at the moment, but its the wrong power and the laptop is so slow as a result.

i'm 99.9% sure, that a wrong charger won't affect the speed of a computer.

What you could be doing is actually damaging the laptop by using the wrong voltage etc.

We need a new charger anyway as want to sell the old laptop, so might as well buy the right one. Thank you though!

I've always found the Trust universal chargers good, they can be found here http://www.necables.co.uk/nec/index.php?target=products&product_id=30300 they come with a 2 year warranty and you can check here (http://www.trust.com/products/product.aspx?artnr=14670) to make sure it's compatible with your laptop.

They're not chargers, they're power supplies....

I would hope that you don't use it as a "charger".

The battery should only really be used when you have no mains power available.

edit - If it's running slow on battery power, it's because new laptops cut the CPU speed to save power when running on batteries.

No we use it on the poper supply 95% of the time, sorry I thought it was called a charger. I'm not overly techie as may be clear! No it runs quicker on batteries than on the power supply, it comes up with a error saying we're only using a 650something power supply and should be using a 900 and the running speed when it is plugged in is appauling.

I had a friend who until recently used to "charge" the laptop and then when it died she'd complain about having to wait for 2-3 hours for it to charge so she could use her laptop again. I had to point out that it's not a "charger" and that she can use the laptop while it's plugged in! lol

Anyway!

I know that Dell make 2 different power supplies..... A 65W and a 90W.
In my opinion you should only use a genuine Dell charger, so id be inclined to get a genuine 90W charger.

Yep I want a genuine Dell charger just because of how the wrong charger seems to render the upgraded processor and the like utterly useless - but does anyone know if I can get a genuine Dell charger from anyone but Dell as £56 is a lot of money (already took the house apart, it's not here, how could we loose it?!).

Anyway I'm with damo24, a universal power supply is fine and cheaper.

If you insist on Dell then Maplin have this one but beleiv me you are paying extra for nothing but the brand, Dell will buy them in and stick their name on them.

All you need is a universal charger as advised above, then set this to the correct wattage.
The reason the 'wrong' Dell one is running so badly is that you are trying to run the laptop with about two thirds the power it requires.Why are you so surprised at this? If you fed your 240V light bulb with 160V, you'd expect it to be rather dimmer?
