Water Butts - probably a daft question

Hi,
I would really love a water butt for our garden, but unfortuately our garden isn't next to our house and we don't really have any pipes we could put one next to.
Is it possible to get free-standing water butts that don't need to be attached to a pipe?

Apologies if I'm being really thick, but thought it was worth asking.

Have you got a shed you can run guttering off?

Hmmm, we have a shed. I doesn't have any guttering at the mo, but I could give it a go.

I just attached some guttering to my shed, works great. Only cost about 5-10 from B&Q.

I got my guttering when my dad replaced theirs at home so I asked him to save me some and he came and fitted it. I haven't 'connected' it to the butt (210l) the water drops onto the lid and then runs into the gutter of the lid then into the butt no problem.
Collect water off shed roof BTW

I'd keep an eye out for anyone else replacing guttering or go skip diving!

If you sheds a bit old like mine fit some of that corrugated plastic sheeting to it, to get more water, you might have enough water to link 2 butts together then.

I'm not sure what kind of shed roof we have - I'm guessing that it's some type of felt. Will that still work?

Yep - ours is felt - incidentally when looking the other day I did see a water butt that collected water itself but obviously the rate of collection is very small compared to even a shed roof.

How far is the garden from the house?

I ask as my downpipe goes through the garage, so I had to put the butt next to the garage, put a connection in the drainpipe, and link the two with hosepipe. I've then added a cut off hozelock value above the barrel to seal the hosepipe when the butt is full.

As long as you have a continual drop this would work with any distance.

There is someone else's garden between our house and our garden, so I don't think that will be feasible. Unfortunately we don't have a garage so I'm guessing that our shed is our only option.

I suppose I ought to start looking at guttering.........
