when i think about it, i asked the guy had the envelope been damaged and his first response was no not at all. I then said surelt it must have been opened or cut and he then said "oh yeah its been cut along the top"

    is that suspicous?

Yeah, it's the first thing you'd check if you just got an empty envelope instead of a £200 watch!

If you hadn't sent recorded, I bet he would have said it didn't arrive at all.

he also said i should have sent it special delivery and this sort of thing would not happen.

i wonder if i should call his bluff and say I have rang the police to speak to the sorting office and himself, maybe say they want to colect the envelope.

Actually, I've heard special delivery packets are actually targeted because they are much more likely to contain valuable items.

I find it hard to believe a postie would rob from a recorded packet. Yeah call his bluff, what have you got to lose?

Well, if the 'cut' was small, or neatly done, then he may have missed it at first glance, and then seen it when inspecting the packaging again... ?

I believe it is possible for sorting machines to slice the end off envelopes. But I am afraid that whatever happened you are out of pocket on this.

OP did you list as Recorded Delivery or Special Delivery? The reason I ask is that some buyers prey on new sellers who list inappropriate postal services.

Virtually the exact same scenario happened with me just before Christmas, only I was the buyer rather than seller.

It was also a watch that was sent recorded delivery. I was highly dubious that the watch had ever been sent to begin with but the tracking number checked out and the buyer refunded me whilst being very helpful/apologetic so i'm pretty sure it was sent and either lost by RM or stolen en route.

Well wouldn't he win a Paypal dispute if he has a tracking code?

Won't stop him from getting a neg though.

Winning a paypal dispute with this value could be tricky. Items over £150 must be signed for and the signature must be available online. If the buyer signed for it legibly and RM get it up on the website then he could get away with it.

If the buyer opens a Not As Described dispute, then it's irrelevant how it was sent. That type of dispute confirms to paypal that they have received the item - tracked or otherwise.
