OP, since they're cold calling you then why dont you start asking them questions like what the guy did in the complainers hosted by dom joly or similar to the youtube video posted by cooldude0

I use an answerphone! .. no cold caller ever gets through that!
If it's a friend or someone important just pick up and talk .. simple and effective ..0 -

Your cheapest option might be to get a separate caller display unit. There is a really cheap one on Ebay - less than a fiver.

You used to be able to buy a small, raher unattractive box with a display on that gave you the caler id, it just fitted between the phone socket and the phone. They were dirt cheap, although I'm not sure if you can still get them. Try freecycle maybe?0
