Claim on insurance?

Hi all,
Today I've had a terrible day. Long story short, I rent a garage from a company to keep my car in. Last night some little scum bags broke in and stole my alloy wheels. I'm really devastated as the inconvenience it has caused is unreal. I contacted the company we rent from and they have been round to fix the garage door.
I was wondering, do you think I can claim on the landlord's insurance? To be honest I don't want some flash wheels (not that they were flash - the thick so and so's), not even sure if it's worth putting like for like replacements on. Anyway, that's by the by.
Does anyone have any advice?
Cheers

Normally it wouldn't be the landlord's role to insure the contents (how would he know how much to insure your property for?)
Your car insurance should cover this. (Unless you only have TPO cover)0 -
Thanks for the reply, that's a good point.
I'm doing the age old thing of not wanting to claim on my car insurance for the premuims. Silly I know. I just thought I would ask and find out under the circumstances. Apparently the building is a listed building! not that I'm sure this makes any difference!
Thanks anyway - need to keep ploddin on to find some cheap wheels"The future needs a big kiss"0 -
Another question - I have protected NCD, though I hear stories of protected claims not being worth much and your premium will still go up when it coems to renewal. I was considering claiming on my own insurance. My alloy wheels were an optional extra to that of the OEM spec. They are declared with my insurance company, so no worries there - I was just wondering if it is worth putting in a claim to cover the cost of new wheels - only if my premium doesn't rocket up in price next year.
Anyone had experience of this?

Yes I had a minor accident last June.
You basically need to compare
cost to replace your alloys (you might now want to change them to soemthing different anyway)
with
excess
plus
increase in premiums for the next 3 years
The way to estimate the increase in premium is to use a comparison site (like confused.com) and get a quote for 0 claims and then edit the quote for 1 fault claim (doesn't mean it was your fault just that the money was not receovered from anyone else).
You don't have to enter the info twice you can edit it.
As a rough estimate I would multiply this by 3 to represent the next 3 years.
Your NCD discount is intact but your premium might rise because of the claim.
e.g. you still get 50% discount so that is unaffected but the premium before discount (and after) may rise.
Quite simply if it's cheaper to replace than face the rise in premiums plus the excess then you should pay for it yourself and not claim.
Don't put valid contact details in to the search engine unless you want to be contacted (address must be genuine).
Be aware that you may still have to declare it anyway
e.g. if in future you are asked whether there have been any losses that might have resulted in a claim then legally and technically you have to say YES.
You could only claim off your landlord if he was negligent (lets say didn't have any locks at all).
If he had some security and they broke it then he probably wasn't negligent and you can't claim off him.0 -
Thanks lisyloo - that is a very helpful answer. I will need to check my excess, then run a search. Just when I was getting my premium down in life this happens! I'm looking for a cheap fix at the moment, as I don't want to provoke another attack - either steel wheels or some cheap alloys. I would probably go for a different set of wheels if I was buying good ones as you suggest - had those for over 5 years, and was still very happy though there were signs of wear. it's a shame about the rubber as the tyres were good and expensive...still, hopefully they might fail on a blow out at speed."The future needs a big kiss"0

Ebay can be a good place to buy cheap alloys, you may even find your own allows on their0

Have a look as you can probably replace them on their for roughly the cost of your excess0

Cheers mate, I know. The thing is, it's not just the point of replacing them it's the fact that I don't want wheels that will just make them think - hmmm he's foolish enough to go and buy some new ones, let's have them as well. I'd rather focus on getting moved, then buying some good wheels when I can park my car in a garage attached to my place. Shame it comes to this really, but I'm not prepared to stick around like this all the time - it's always on my mind.
A bit off track there mate, but thanks all the same for the help and advice!"The future needs a big kiss"0 -
Try decent locking nuts. Alternatively if the garage is within about 100 feet of your house you can get a baby wireless monitor, they are rechargeable. You put the microphone part in the garage and the monitor in your lounge or bedroom. If anyone breaks in you can either go out and scare them aware or ring the police.
Alternatively you can buy cheap garage alarms0
