Home food delivery

Hi,
Sorry if this was asked before - I couldn't find anything on the subject.

Do you tip the guy who delivers your food shopping? I've never had food shopping delivered, so I don't know what they do and what they don't and whether you tip them? Like if they bring the food as far as inside or something?

Also are you not worried about the quality of the fruit they pick for you, as you cannot pick it yourself?

I am never sure when to tip and when don't. Never sure whether to tip my hairdreser etc..:-(( I usually ask my sister but she doesn't know.

I don't think they would be allowed to accept money, I have never given a delivery person anything and I have had many grocery deliveries from 4 different supermarkets. As for the quality, you are right to be concerned. I have given up on using Sainsbury's grocery delivery service as I got way too many short dates, sometimes the items had to be used within 24 or 48 hours, because some pickers couldn't care less what they put into your trolley. This can be a major pain if you plan meals in advance as you have to start swapping meals around, it's a big problem for me as there are 3 of us for 4 nights a week and 4 of us for 3 nights, so not everything is interchangeable! I even had items already on their use-by date. As for fruit and veg, the quality is not always good as the picker will usually not be as careful as you would be yourself, after all they are not going to be the one eating it! :D

I never buy anything perishable like fruit and veg online. I much prefer to do that myself. Tins, packets, frozen and some fridge stuff (like meat that can be frozen or dairy) these are all fine buying online.

As for the original question - I don't think many people (if at all) tip their delivery guy. On the other note - I always tip the hairdresser.

Thank you very much for your answers.
I am not sure whether delivery is good for me then - I go shopping weekly to make sure my veg (my OH is very much 1 meat 2 weg man:-)) is fresh so once I am there I might as well pick up the rest.

Jaytin - when you say you tried 4 supermarkets, did you try Ocado as well then? As they are "higher class" weren't they more carefull about the veg and "use by date" days?

I also tip hairdresser now:-)) And beauty therapist.
Sometimes some people behave so confidently that I am worried that I will offend them if I give tip. Because it's small amount and they don't look like they need my pennies. Even though obviously they do job for living.. I don't know how to explain it.

I'm afraid I don't tip anyone EXCEPT the bin men and the regular post man at Christmas. When we had a milkman and a paper boy/girl I used to tip them too but that was a long time ago!

A friend of mine told me that I should tip the food delivery people because then you will get your shopping delivered quickly within your timeslot and because they don't get paid much. She's soft-hearted.

I can't say I tip regularly, but if OH is ever home when the food arrives he always grabs some change and it's always appreciated.

I never buy my meats or veggies online, only heavy and bulky things that don't require 'thought' when taking off the shelves :)

Well, that is what I thought...
If you could tip the person picking you the stuff then you probably wouldn't worry as much about their choice for your veggies either...

i have my shopping delivered i never tip them. have used sainsburys, asda, tesco and ocado . it`s true that it`s best to pick your own veg and fruit but otherwise not had any problems. im use asda most of the time. used ocado a couple of time they are good but not that cheap what i like is they tell you if something is not in stock before you checkout so you can choose another item if you want and you get everything that you have ordered. also the bag are diffrent colours for diffrent types of product e.g. freezer, storecupboard e.t.c which good as you what items are in each bag and you get a free times paper with your order. i would use them again.

It is very unlikely that your picker will also be your delivery driver they tend to be very different jobs the driver will be doing deliveries for the whole of their shift and the picker will be picking for the whole of their shift. The routes are likely to be computerised so that they go from one to another in the (hopefully) logical order given within each time slot and what time they get to you depends on where you live in relation to the other orders and the store and the traffic and other conditions.
