Have Sky acted unlawfully?

I had my Sky service for well over a year so the contract has well and truly expired, there is no issue with cancelation fee's.....

What has happend is that Sky, took a DD payment from my bank early.
Instead of making a repeated DD payment request they decided upon themselves to leave it untill the following month to charge me for two months service.

As soon as I discovered the problem I jumped on it, cancelling my subscription with them so as not to have this thing drag on.

The thing is, when I cancelled my subscription, they terminated my service, less than one week into the the month, but they still insisted on charging me for one months subscription.

Are they legally and morally entitled to do this?
Surely they should have continued to supply a service untill the end of the month they were expecting me to pay for, or just charge me for the time I actually received the service.

All being fair, I would have paid for what I received, but now the debt has been passed to a collection agency.

I phoned the agency today and told them there was an outstanding dispute between Sky and myself, that I had been overcharged, and they couldn't put the phone down quick enough.

I was told that they had no obligation to get involved with the dispute and I should contact sky. They even gave me the phone number for Sky.

Has anybody else had this?

Your contract hasn't expired, you've just gone past the minimum term. After 12 months it becomes a one month rolling contract.

You need to read the contract, I suspect you needed to give 30 days notice to cancel but if you said I want to cancel immediatly they did so but took payment in lieu of notice.

Debt collection agency I've no idea about.

i've had this kind of problem with sky and its still dragging on after 2 years!!

2 years ago i had an offer from sky of a years viewing at half price, unfortunately sky failed to honour this as they kept taking the full price monthly dd's.
i finally cancelled the dd when they had already taken over the total amount owed for the years viewing at half price. they cancelled my viewing card immediately after 11 months into the contract and also demanded the final months full payment of £45.

18 months ago it went to a debt collector who thankfully didnt take action after i explained. then sky wrote to me to offer to cancel half my debt if i payed now! (i refused - they actually owed me a refund).

now i have received a letter from another debt collection agency chasing the debt again!!

whats even more annoying is sky keeps sending me letters asking me to come back to them and they will wipe half the debt clear. but they owe me.

i am awaiting being taken to court for this amount but look forward to showing all my proof of initial offer and actual payments to finally win my case and get these idiots off my back.
