Post Office Car Insurance

I'm just after some advice really on a policy.
The policy started in November and a couple of weeks ago I was hit from behind in stationary traffic. There is an admission of liability from the third party and the claim has all been settled and paid.
When I rang up to change my insurance to my new car, they said that the company I was with now (Highway) wouldn't insure me on the car. Yet after ringing another broker, I got a really good price from those same insurers and bought the policy. When I rang Post Office back and informed them of this and told them I wanted to cancel my exisiting policy they said I would have to pay off the remainder of the existing monthly payments in a lump sum - approximately £270. They said because I have made a claim I have to finish paying off the policy.
Where do I stand?
I'm annoyed because ultimately they couldn't provide me with a price from my current insurers yet someone else could and I wouldn't of minded paying the difference every month if there was an increase in cost. But because they were unable to provide me with a quote I now have to pay a lump sum off.
I'm a bit confused and a bit miffed also. I've been told just to cancel my direct debit but I definitely don't want to do this as I don't want any black marks against my name.

You are stuck with this. They are correct in saying your claim made against the policy means you cannot have any refund for cancelling. Also they aren't bound to accept any change of vehicle you want to make.
You won't get any black marks over the direct debit being cancelled, (but will if they don't get the £270 you owe them!)0 -
If and when Highway recover the claim costs they will sometimes allow you a refund of the balance of your premiums less any of their cancellation fees (Which can be quite high).0

I can't afford to be paying them this lump sum after getting a new and a new policy so I'll just have to have two insurance policys running. Naff!
Thanks for the help.0 -
Make sure they don't just take it all via the dd!0
