why do tax credits need my payroll number?

It is included on the application form, god knows why as it is not needed.
Also when you phone the reason they ask for it is they have strict guidance to follow and so if its in the guidance need to ask for it...
If you dont have it, then dont give it, wont make a difference.
It can make a difference when making an application.I was asked for my PAYE Reference number by the adviser at the job centre, so that she could phone it through to the Tax Credit Office. But she also said it didn't matter if I couldn't get it!
The jobcentreplus adviser might not know that it could matter when making an application.0
