why do tax credits need my payroll number?

They have never asked for mine, as a security question if I ring them they sometimes ask me who my employer is but never my payroll number.0

Most people will have a payroll number if the company they work for uses a payroll program. It might not show as a payroll number as such, in Sage it is the Employee number.
As tax credits do not pay via the employer any more I wonder why they would require it though? Unless they are just checking that you are actually working for who you say you are? But since they stopped paying via the employer I have not been asked any questions by tax credits about an employee.Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p0 -
I called the tax credits line to say i had started employment and wanted to claim childcare for my daughter. They asked for a payroll number. Can they see how much I am earning?
its not your payroll number they want, its your workplace PAYE code and address, so they can see which tax office your company works through
However, you have to declare all income anyway. Is there a problem with them knowing how much you earn?

There's no problem with them knowing how much I earn I was just wondering what they needed it for as ive never been asked for it before. Will I have my PAYE code on my first wage slip?0

It sounds to me as theough what they want is your employers PAYE reference number.
That is the number HMRC have allocated to your employer when they set up the PAYE scheme.
TCO need that number so that they can trace and record your employment on your tax credit claim. Ask your employer what it is as it isn't usual for it to appear on a payslip. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. They have a section in the system where they can record your payroll number, so they may ask for it, they may not. Tax Credits don't pay anything through your employer. They can't use your payroll number to see how much you are earning.
Some advisors may ask for it just because there is somewhere to put it (same with employer phone number). I'm sure the info from these fields was used at some point in the past when payments were made through employers, but aren't important now.0 -
They would have asked for the Payroll number
It is included on the application form, god knows why as it is not needed.
Also when you phone the reason they ask for it is they have strict guidance to follow and so if its in the guidance need to ask for it...
If you dont have it, then dont give it, wont make a difference.0 -
help i'm TOTALLYconfused / bemused by all these tax credit & child care vouchers , i have just returned to work & am earning £ 5.500 approx & hubby earns about 33.k , we are having to use holiday club / nursery during the holidays . When i spoke to HM recently to notify them i was now earning they said i could only claim for holiday childcare if i was going to use it for 4 consecutive wks in the hols , which i wont be , so would i be better off finding out if my nhs employer uses child care vouchers ? , also when & how do i go about applying for them , wondering if i've left it too late for this summer as i need to book care asap , PLEASE i hope someone can simplify this for me cos i'm a bit thick & hubby away at the mo !! , thanks

nursery vouchers are taken out of your pay at source, so if the system is already up and running at your workplace, then you should be able to claim them from your next pay day onwards

I have just gone back to work this week.:j
I was asked for my PAYE Reference number by the adviser at the job centre, so that she could phone it through to the Tax Credit Office. But she also said it didn't matter if I couldn't get it!0
