do I really need blue-ray?

as posted on earlier thread we are looking into getting a vbox - our new TV, sony 40" v series arrives today & our old vhs/dvdplayer combi has now had it

my question is if we buy a dvd player do we need a recordable version if we are having a vbox, or do we need a blue ray

the tv is not a huge thing in our lives, I watch Corrie & tennis when its on, OH watches a footie match if its on, but not every match, lunchtime news & possibly sat night TV if theres anything decent on - as for putting on a dvd, maybe once or twice a month -

I don't really want to pay for something I'm not gonna use - any advice?

thanx

You only need a blu-ray if you want to watch blu-ray films.

Unless you ever buy blu-ray disks. Go for a modern one with HDMI, though, as they do upscaling and HDMI will give much less interference than SCART. The Panasonic ones with HDD for recording are really brilliant.

Only get BluRay if you really must watch BluRay discs.

Hard drive/DVD recorder is always a good idea rather than just a DVD as you will at some point either fill up your VBox or want to save something off it for watching in the future.

Get multi-region as well if it's available so you can play non-UK discs. A lot of films come out in the US first and a lot of older stuff is only available in the US.

The Sony HDD/DVD recorders(RDR-HXD series) are also very good if you want to keep to the same manufacturer.
  • TV's arrived looks OK, only had a time for a quick scan of the book, I don't quite know what the 'Bravia' bit is yet, other than it will only work if its connected wth other Bravia products from the Sony range

someone did say that a bluray player will also play current dvds, but I can't see us paying for blueray discs - we are realy not that sophisticated when it comes to appreciating the nuances in the new stuff - if its in focus & I can hear it - that'll do me

If by Bravia you mean Bravia link or whatever they call it - it's for controlling all your Sony AV gear with one remote.

If you mean the XD 14 mega picture emotion engine or whatever ridiculous name they give it - it's just a gimmick.

We find blu ray looks very nice on animated films, but is nothing amazing on others.
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

I have a lot of HD-DVDs and quite a few blu-rays and the difference is night and day on my TV, but if you aren't really into films don't bother.
