Malarone - just phoned around and got the following information for 20 tablets:

    Boots on-line: £2.21 each (less 3.5% topcashback =£2.13 each)
Boots store: Between £3.20 and £3.25 each (no, the "3" was not a typo!)
    Asda: £2.22p each
    Tesco: £2.52p each

So......... Asda it is! (don't want to faff about sending prescriptions to Boots on line...although I have done that before - also time is short)

As an avid Moneysaver I will be considering Boots and Tesco for the points, and Superdrug for the Greasypalm cashback!
    ...

Can you get points on prescriptions? I didn't think you could with Boots, but maybe online is different??
  • We are a family of four due to go to Africa in July..we need 23 Malarone tablets each for a two week holiday. We were suggested superdrug or tescos by the travel nurse BUT when it actually came down to it our good old fashioned local chemist came up with £2.05p each. Cheaper than anything we found on line or in any of the supermarkets...give your chemist a chance to quote and dont immediately assume the big boys "on line" will be cheaper!
We were given anti-malarial prescriptions by our nurse today in preparation for our honeymoon to Kenya! Bit surprised to learn these will be at least £50 each, on top of the Yellow Fever jab which is £45... but hopefully will all be worth it.

The nurse advised us to shop around as the price of Malarone varies depending on the pharmacist. From an old thread on here (2007) I saw that Asda and Boots online were the cheaper ones, but does anyone have a more recent experience of purchasing Malarone and the best places to go?

They are expensive, but are still 100% effective (well, they were 2 years ago when I used them). It's an added expense to the holiday, but I've had friends who've had malaria, and say it's a really nasty disease - most strains stay in your system and it can reoccur.
  • I'm going to Bucaramanga, Colombia for 26 days in September and would also like some advice on Malarone / Antimalarial Medicine.

The area I am going to is quite populated and civilized. I have researched online and I've read that there is only a risk of Malaria at areas below 800m (regimen 1). The place I am going to is 1,064m (regimen 4). However, there are certain sites that state that there is a high risk of Malaria throughout Colombia regardless of area.

I believe that I will need about 36 tablets (If needed) and I am just wondering if I do actually need Malarone and where would be the best place to obtain it? As different people will have different recommendations!!! So I'm just trying to get the general idea on who is the best / cheapest as for 36 tablets I have been quoted £75!!!

It is just in case anyone has been to Colombia and can offer any advice?

    Many thanks,

    Regards

I spent a year in Colombia doing field research for my PhD. I did not take anti-malarials: the best advice I was given was that malaria is usually only present in the lowland jungles.

In any case, check whether you really need malarone for Colombia. I doubt it: other prophylactics are likely to effective there.

Im in China and got told there is minimal risk of malaria. I still am taking Malarone.

For the sake of a few quid id rather be sure im less likely to get snuffed out by a fly.
  • I'm also going to Kenya in Sept. so have been looking around for cheapest prices.
Best I've found is pharmacydirect (co.uk) (sorry about that but I've been told I can't post with a link???) where the cost of malarone is £2.22 per tab. For 2 weeks you'll need 23 tabs...total cost £51.06.
    Slightly cheaper that chemistdirect.co.uk!
    Have a good hol.
