Cheapest place to buy Malarone? (we have private prescriptions)

We were given anti-malarial prescriptions by our nurse today in preparation for our honeymoon to Kenya! Bit surprised to learn these will be at least £50 each, on top of the Yellow Fever jab which is £45... but hopefully will all be worth it.

The nurse advised us to shop around as the price of Malarone varies depending on the pharmacist. From an old thread on here (2007) I saw that Asda and Boots online were the cheaper ones, but does anyone have a more recent experience of purchasing Malarone and the best places to go?

As an avid Moneysaver I will be considering Boots and Tesco for the points, and Superdrug for the Greasypalm cashback!

Thanks for reading, look forward to tips from those in the know...

Last time I bought them Boots On-line Pharmacy was the cheapest.

this type of drug is extremely prone to being faked, even high street pharmacies have been stocking fake medicines complete with barcodes, seals etc. per a TV documentatary about 1 year ago. So beware of dodgy sources.

Do you really have to buy Malorone? We went to Goa and used Allvaclor palloquin and last year went to Cambodia and used doxycycline You may need to take them for a bit longer but they are considerably cheaper. We did not suffer any side effects and did not catch malaria. I think doctors just precribe htem because they are the leading brand but it may be worth asking if there is anything cheaper you can have as for a 2 week holiday it was going to be over £60. The price is pretty consistent on lin or via a pharmacy. the other tablets cost about £11 for a three week holiday

Could be wrong but I trhink Kenya is classed as "chloroquine-resistant" area and i think with doxycycline there is a risk of a reaction whereby you become extra sensitive to sunlight - not much good if you want to get a tan! The nurse at my GP surgery suffered from it when she took doxycycline.

Doxycycline can cause sun light sensitivity but we had no problems. We took the tablets for a week in the sun knowing that we had the Malorone prescription which only needed to be taken the day before we went if there were any problems. just because there is a possible side effect does not mean that you WILL get it. We could also have taken a Larium based drug which my GP advised me had had bad press but may people had again taken it without problems. We needed chloroquine resitant anti malaria protection and hte choices were
1 Malarone very expensive but little chance of side effects
2 Doxycycline as above but very cheap
3 Larium bad reputation some chance of side effects again cheap.

    Take your choice!
