we have a Japanese Akita called simba we rescued him at 3 mths old and have had him for 7 mths i have just been out for a walk when another dog was on the field with us and simba came free from the lead because the collar snapped he went straight for the other dog and bit him ive read that Japanese Akita's are meant to be dangerous dogs but this is the first time simba has shown signs of this can anyone help and advise us of what we should do

Akitas are a very powerful breed, I had two and I have other peoples vet bills to prove how dangerous they can be, I would suggest socialising him with other dogs as often as possible, stepping up the training, as you must be in full control at all times.
My Male Akita at 8 months old snapped a Halti collar in order to get to a adult staffy, which required over £300 in vets bills to be treated.0 -
Hi, I have a large akita and I would suggest to you that you get a check chain collar, this enables you to be in control all of the time and is just great for large breeds and it teaches a bigger dog to walk to heal.I would NEVER let a akita off the lead in a public place unless I was absolutely sure that it was dog freindly, in fact all of the advice given involved never ever letting off the lead, but our girl is lucky enough to have her own field and freinds have come with their dogs and they have run around fine,so im sure she would be safe, she now recalls but it took us along time, shes 2 now and a fantastic dog,but we have spent alot of time on her .
Did they tell you your puppy had shown signs of dog aggression, when adopting? Not all Akitas are dog aggressive in fact our girl is often attacked by small dogs who snap at her,she is very calm and often appears shocked by other dogs behaviour.
Once equipped with your collar I would suggest socialisation at puppy training classes, where do you live? Our trainer bred akita and was aware of how difficult they are to train, they are VERY clever and think that the idea of recall is ridiculously over rated!!!!!
Good luck pm me if you need any info!0 -
We've also been advised at the time of purchasing our puppy never to use a halti, but this is down to the individual and the majority of the breeders we know use check/choke collars, a halti does'nt give you that control in my opinion.0

Pay the other owner's vet bills for a start.
(PS I am a dog owner and one of my dogs attacked someone's greyhound a couple of years ago).British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
thanks for your reply at the moment we are getting him trained and take him out 4 times a day to the local parks he interacts with a lot of dogs there he has never done this before but im just worried now he has done it will he do it again0

Are you going to puppy training though??0

Very possibly, so you need to ensure he can't get off the lead again. I brought my Ridgeback from Africa with me and she would have killed any dog she could get at, and nothing was going to change that.
My SIL dog (Doberman) got of the lead last year (broke it) and killed a lamb in the middle of a Pony Club rally, result was all dogs have been banned which is not great for those of that spend the time training our dogs not to chase sheep.
I'll go off now and have a wee rant to myself now.......0 -

What is it about little dogs and Akitas?
My Male Akita was attacked a few times by JRT's swinging on his neck, he never attacked them back just used to look at me as if to say "will you get him off I am bored now"
The same JRT attacked my !!!!! akita and the outcome was a tad different.0
