For a number of alternatives, check out Martin's guide to breakdown cover

Remember you are looking for something that includes Recovery (or Relay with the AA). This is an additional service to Roadside Rescue.

AutoAid pay you back, usually in 14 days and most customer feedback says its promptly paid without any fuss.
By return of post, in my experience (three times). And, when I have been stuck without cash or CC, they have agreed to be billed direct by the breakdown firm, though it would be wise not to rely on that and always have a CC with you.

I would imagine that Autoaid is perfect for those who travel to work a few miles from home and only pop out once in a while.

It's perfect for anyone that want's the full service that other breakdown companies charge an arm & a leg for. I commute over 100miles each way to work and regularly drive on 400 mile journeys. I find it's perfect for me. It even covers my motorcycle.

There are some niggly things AutoAid doesn't cover - they are all explained in the policy document online, but the notable ones I tremember are:

    1. It's pay & reclaim rather than free at point of use (as already described)
    2. The broken down vehicle mustn't exceed 2500cc
    3. 'At Home' service is limited to about £60 I think (should be enough to get you started with a flat battery or taken your local garage for more serious issues)

    That's right!

(There are some restrictions on the type of vehicle - I've mentioned the 2500cc limit and I think there's a limit on the weight, but it covers most vehicles you would ordinarily drive)

Edit: the weight limit is 2.5 tonnes
Cover is for a car, car derived van, motorcycle, or motorised caravan.
Cover also includes a recovereing a trailer/small caravan not exceeding 10ft/3m in length if attached to the broken down vehicle.

That restriction is for a motorised caravan, ive got a merc 2.8 and its covered, its badly worded on the website, ring them to confirm.

Ah thanks - it's not clearly worded in the policy and could be taken both ways. I did think it was a strange limitation, but I didn't check as my car is less than 2500cc anyway. I presume the 2.5 tonnes limit also applies only to a motorised caravan too then.

I think the limits are imposed so that recovery can be made with almost any recovery vehicle rather than a special larger capacity one - though they did say when I enquired that recovery of a motorcycle would be via a specialist vehicle, not just thrown on the back of a car transporter.
