Dollar against the Pound

Myself and my Girlfriend travel on 2 month trip to USA.
We have £8000 and we wanted some advice on what t do with our cash.
Should we buy dollars now?
Should we open a new account that offers better access to our cash whilst abroad?
I currently bank with Abbey and My girlfriend banks with Halifax.
Some advice would be really appreciated
Thanks
Dave

Realistically only you can make that choice. When are you travelling.
If it was me and i was going this week i'd buy 25% of currency/TC then use C/C for the remainder.
It's difficult to say when the time is right to commit to buying currency especially given how well the GBP is performing to the USD.
If you look in the USD currency thread you will see how much the rate has changed in the last few eeks.0 -

Just a thought - Usually when i am en route to the USA i am arseholed before we have even leave UK airspace.
But I seem to recall something about $10,000 when entering the US. Might be worth looking into.0 -

Yeah, isnt it on the green form you fill in en route .. something like $10,000 in monetary instruments is the max allowable.
Or at least you are supposed to inform them0 -

dont take that much cash with you its not the right thing to do what happens if you loose it. Take some cash small amount and then get a post office credit card, put everything on that and get the visa rate. if you want to withdraw cash get one that costs the least to do it there. Cant believe I am going to say this but Abbey do the Zero card if they bother to send it to you. Before you go just pay a load of cash to it and you can withdraw it for free.0
