My rant? I believe in the situation that I did have every reason to argue my point as did OH. Neither of us look under 18, or 21 for that matter. I produced ID on request. Oh was not purchasing, so shouldn't have to present ID.

I was wrong to call them a busybody as I wasn't aware there was a law which prevented this, however I believe the manner and attitude of him was appalling. An assistant manager couldn't answer his own companies policy correctly and got flustered trying to do so, there was no notice displaying 'Challenge 25', there was no notice in the store saying of this rule about not allowing anyone to purchase alcohol who is with someone who looks under 25 so I think I had every right to be annoyed at it. And express my frustration at him.

Well I have to agree its a silly rule. I think the person buying the alcohol should be ID'd, if then that person decides to give it to a minor then the checkout operator shoudln't be responsable.

I bet 90% of the checkout operators also think its asilly rule.

No doubt they do, but it is a silly rule that could cost them their job, get them a criminal conviction and a fine. If the staff at the shop wanted they could ask anyone who looks under the age of 40, 50, 60 or anyone at all to produce proof of age, as it is their licence/criminal record/money on the line they are entitled to take whatever precautions they wish to avoid the repercussions.

If i was an operator id ask everyone for ID, its not easy finding a new job after you've been fired, esp now!

This thread is just going round in circles, but to summarise and hopefully put an end to this thread...

It doesn't matter if he looked 12, 17, 18, 21, 25 or 40, if the seller CANNOT PROVE the age of someone in question, they are LEGALLY BOUND to refuse the sale. It doesn't matter what signs are up, how ignorant the manager was, or how annoyed you and the OH were. IT'S THE LAW.

Your OH was given the opportunity to prove his age, but didn't have any ID. It doesn't matter to them WHY he didn't want to carry some ID, just the fact he didn't.

At least you know for future reference...

OK I've ranted about the need to carry ID, but I can see the operators point of view! It is not their fault. It is the law taht needs changing!

It has always been illegal to sell to minors but as usual the authorities hit the "easy target", being the operators, the hardest!! Saves on paying for Coppers!!!

But I do still hate the idea of being forced to carry any form of ID.

Who's forcing you to carry ID? If you don't want to carry ID, don't carry it, that's YOUR decision, based on free will and Human Rights.

Just don't complain when you can't get something you want, due to the fact you can't prove who you are or how old you are.

if your friend cant be trusted to look after his passport when you go to the shops. ;p

This is the only ID apart from Drivers Licence and Passport that is accepted.

The problem with these things is they change every couple of years. Theres been the portman card, the prove it card and now this all bandied about as 'the only accepted ID' etc.

Theres also the way they are produced - virtually any old company can apply to 'sell' these things, and as such loads get out on the black market , and theres little incentive for companies to admit when this has happened. Often when theres a bunch of them being sold round a college or school, local shops and (especially) nightspots refuse to serve people with these cards, so the people that have got them legit have wasted the application fee.

Edit: Also I've read a few of these threads and seen replies such as 'if I'd have been asked if I was under 18/21/25, i'd have been far from offended'. I'd guess that these are all women, as I would be quite offended if someone mistook me- in my late twenties - for being that young, i'm supposed to be in my prime for gods sake!

i looked at the different types of cards on the site and to me most of them look like fakes available online, if i had one of these i would not be surprised to be refused on the basis the retailer thinks its fake, especially given mine would state year of birth as 1981 and that wouldnt look genuine, its bad enough i was one of the first with the new style photocard driving license as many thought they were fakes at first as they had never seen them
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)
