It's bad enough that the QLD government has a specific website about it:

It's like Benedorm or something: fantastic if you want to get as drunk as you possibly can and catch the clap. Not so great if not.
If you want to go to QLD and see the Great Barrier Reef then Airlie Beach is a good base. I stayed at The Airlie Beach Hotel a few years back and it was excellent value I thought at the time. The town is a bit backpackery but not so bad for all that as it means you get good value facilities.
I won't recommend Airlie beach late at night if you're a single traveller I stay there in the area not hotel and felt very unsafe.:kisses3: Married 29th September 2012
