Parents in a pickle - they need BB!

My parents are still on dial up internet access and want to get broadband. They were on the basic free weekend calls package with BT but about a month ago Mum got carried away and changed the plan to the free evenings and weekends plan therefore tying themselves in for 12 months. Can anyone recommend the best way of them getting BB? I've suggested they go with BT BB which I know will tie them in for 12 months but once this contract will be up the phone one will also be up leaving them free to move to another provider. We're in the digital switch over area next year so I'm guessing they might switch to Sky then as I'm sure they'll be great offers as new customers. Does anyone have any better suggestions for BB that doesn't involve a contract longer than 12 months so that they can see thorugh the phone contract?

Thanks in advance, the advice on here is always great! :j

Their contract with BT does not preclude them from taking broadband from another supplier.
If they are on an exchange that has been unbundled by Sky they could get basic Sky TV for £16.50/month with the option of Sky broadband at £5, 10 or 15 depending on the package. If they subsequently went with Sky talk then there would be a £5 discount on the broadband.
First thing to do is to see what ISPs have LLU at their exchange.
Do an Exchange search on the Samknows website.

The " digital switch over " has nothing whatsoever to do with Sky.

As suggested, you can get BB from any provider, not just BT.

There are quite a few really good small BB providers that ony require a 30 day contract.

IDNet or Zen to name 2.

BT Broadband is I believe an 18 month contract..
  • Hi new to this and would like to know if anyone has experience the new charging system that Sky has introduced where if your phone line is not conntected to a multiroom box, they charge you £27.50 per box? Have spoken to Sky and they are refusing to refund the charge as it was their engineer that has made the problem.

If you do not have all your boxes connected to your phone line Sky will charge individual subscriptions for each box.
Did Sky's engineer not connect the phone lines, or did you disconnect the boxes?

Thanks, fair enough, still a long time to get stitched in to a company as bad as BT for Broadband.

I'm aware that the digital switch over is nothing to do with Sky, my point was that they will probably end up getting Sky when the switchover happens therefore it would make sense for them to have the complete package from them. I also know that they can get their BB from other providers, just wanted advice on other companies so will check out IDNet and Zen as suggested.
