How can I stop a cat coming in my house?

I have an 8mth old neutered female cat. Before she was spayed a tom cat next door but one sussed on she was there and took to lingering outside the back door. This wasn't too bad, as we were just waiting a few weeks to get our cat (Kitty) done.
Now she's been spayed (end of April) and is all healed up and enjoying being able to go out side. This tom cat is still around and they play fight a lot, sometimes he'll get a bit rough and she'll come in and sulk.
Since the weather has got nicer and we've had the doors and windows open, this tom cat keeps coming in the house. Over the weekend I've found him asleep on our bed (Kitty doesn't do this as dp has sinus/nose issues) and on the sofa. He's always sneaking in and now it's starting to be a bit of a problem, particularly as I don't want him spraying anywhere.
We wanted to teach Kitty to use the cat flap, but so far have been unable to as the blinking tom cat just uses it!!
What can I do to put him off??

I do empathise as I seem to have half the cats in the neighbourhood wander into my house, either through the cat flap or when the door to the garden is open.
Most come to help themselves to the biscuits left down for my cat, but one in particular does sneak in & make herself at home & mooches about upstairs. I think perhaps the previous owners welcomed her into the house so she thinks she has rights.
Have you thought about getting one of those cat flaps where a magnetic 'key' is fitted to the collar so only your Kitty can get in. (unless of course Tom has this kind of access into his own house which will grant him access to yours too)
The other thing you can try, which is a little cruel but should do the trick is buy a water pistol or use a plant spayer to direct a jet of water at him each time he enters your house or you find him in the house somewhere. He should soon get the message.
I tend to end up clapping my hands & hissing when my persistant visitor won't leave when I ask her too.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
We had cats coming in our house to eat Lilys food and it was stressing her out so much she started doing her wee's in the house (she's a big girls blouse and would rather run away than defend her territory
)
In the end we had to spend £100 on getting a cat flap that works with microchips.
It was well worth the cost as she is back to her old self now she knows none of the neighbours cats can come in.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -
Ahh bless we have the local thug cats one huge black one with one eye who eats all my poor Tobys food whilst she is asleep, but i hear the flap go and run to the door..
You can get special cat flaps and they wear a collar so only they can use it, but mine hates collars so im not sure of an alternative..
good luckReceived £2,626.00 in PPI -2013:j
Received £1400 charges - 2006:j0 -

Get the one we have got, PetPorte. It works via the microchip you have put into your cat.
Its pricey at £100 + chipping cost but IMO well worth it.
I don't like collars on cats so we had to go this route even though the collar activated cat flaps are alot cheaper than the microchip one.

Hi,
I have a similar problem with a big un neutered tom cat who seems to think he owns every house and garden in the vicinity.. not sure whether he is a stray or just doesn't like his own house. (no collar/outside a lot of the time.) We have 2 one year old kitty's girl and boy, both neutered and micro chipped.
They have been going out and about for a few months with us at home but we have just started letting them out during the day when we are at work leaving the cat flap for house access and I came home today to find the big ginger in the house with my 2 scared kitty's and 'poo' in all sorts of places (think from my little boy who is a big girls blouse...!).
Have been researching the cat flaps that work from the chips but i'm unsure if they are going to work as it says another cat can gain entry if 4 seconds or less behind the one its chasing in, and our little girl is short legged, round tummy and partially sighted....so not sure if she will be quick enough... not sure what to do for best now...
I have spoken to the CPL who advise putting up posters to find if he has an owner, if not then they could have him neutered but then would return him to our vicinity.
Any advice would be appreciated, particularly from anyone who is using the 'chip' style cat flap.

Hi Time.
I too was worried about the 4 second delay in the door closing but you can change this to whatever you want from 1 second to 26 seconds. I got this info by e-mailing petporte themselves.

Thanks for your quick reply Shelly,
I take it you have one of these cat flaps then? Would you recommend them?
The time element is presumably after the cat has activated the 'open' mechanism, and the '4' seconds is the time it takes for it to close, if you change it to less than 4 does it give enough time for the cat to actually get in the house, i'd hate to think of kitty's being stuck outside with the big bully....AFD - J 19 J 11 A 2 S 10 Oct 6 N 0/?

Yes we do and yes I would
Once the cat passes under the porch outside the locking mechanism opens on the inside allowing your cat to come in. If the cat just sits under the porch or just passes under the porch but doesn't attempt to come in the door locks itself after the time you have set i.e 4 seconds.
If the cat decides to come in once the locking mechanism opens but halfway through just stops, the mechanism still locks after the time allowed but the catches/locks are made in such a way that the door is able to close and lock as normal once cat has passed through. If this scenario happens the door won't attempt to close with the cat stuck in the middle (so the cat could be half in half out indefinately)

Thanks for all your information, I think I shall order one from the manufacturers, I understand they are cheaper if you buy direct.
Thanks again.

I got ours from www.petplanet.co.uk as at the time they were the cheapest at £100 delivered.
If you order from www.petporte.com directly it is more expensive at £109.45.
Also make sure you order the colour you want and the fixing you want. They come in a choice of brown or white and have different fixing packs for doors or walls.
