The deal doesn't sound too good. Only 1/2 meg broadband with no free calls during weekday evenings, no fully itemised billing. The killer would be the poor customer services.

The bit about the cheap calls to U.S. made me laugh. Have they not heard of 18866, 1899, etc.

Don't know if its already been said, if you go for ntl's all inclusive phone package there is no connection charges. I pay £10.50 line rental and £14.50 for all 01/02 calls.
£25 per month may not be the cheapest but it does mean I don't have to worry about the 6p connection charges/ do not have to scream at the kids to get off the phone or to stop cooking their brains on the mobiles/ I can use access codes starting 020 if I want.
In practice I use my all inclusive mobile minutes to call mobiles. So my phone bills are fixed each month apart from intnl.
Incidentally if you have a second ntl line you don't have to pay a second call charge for the all incl. calls.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Apparently there's a rumour on cable forum about the second line rental increasing from £7.00 to £11.00 in the next round of price rises this year. I suppose you could downgrade your package but then again there might be a £10 admin fee imposed for doing so. Yep, ntl truly look after their customers!

I would not go back to NTL. Look beyond the glossy marketing of their "1MB broadband for £12.50 if you take out talk unlimited" satellite TV channel and see the real costs. Connection charges 6p, high call charges peak, other random charges like itemised billing and caller display charges, absolutely awful customer service cannot describe how bad they really are! (thats if you even get through to them. An hour on hold is not uncommon), 0845 numbers for this and 0870 for broadband support and impossible to leave them. They will continue to bill you after they've taken the box away and thats after you've given them a months notice in writing! You can get cheaper via BT option 1, a freeview box and broadband from about £15. With more future flexibility.
Once they have you in their clutches they have nothing but contempt for their customers. A company who treats customers as they do does not deserve to be trading. No wonder so many people are leaving - vote with your feet!
