unneccesary congestion due to police.

ive had a google but cant find anything on this, which i find a bit alarming considering the amount of vehicles involved, maybe someone here knows?

on friday the 22nd of may around 6 or 7pm there was a huge tailback on the m8 from the city centre right up to the glasgow fort junction, eventually when i got to the fort junction there was an unmarked coned off vw crafter van parked at a jaunty angle half on the hard shoulder half on the grass verge with a camera on the hard shoulder facing the traffic que that was coming towards it very slowly, just after this there were 2 marked police bmw x5s and 2 police bikes that looked ready to give chase, why on earth do they think its ok to cause so much congestion like this at rush hour on a firday night and what exactly was it all about?
secondly, this friday 29th of may leaving edinburgh passing the airport but heading towards the city centre there was another similar looking situation to this except the police actually had temporary traffic lights set up stopping masses of vehicle heading into the city centre there was again a significant police presence here and again similarly it was a very busy period on a very busy road.

does anyone know what any of this is about?

They are using ANPR cameras in the VW Crafter to catch the uninsured, tax-less, vehicles with drug dealing markers, banned drivers etc.

What pees me off is the congestion caused by Census Surveys.

i thought it would be anpr,so to catch or maybe not even catch anyone thousands of peoples lifes are being put on hold because the police are too lazy to actually do some work, just let the camera do the work. as usual its the majority who seem to suffer.

What are they supposed to do instead? Memorise every number plate in the country and the history that goes with it, or let a very advanced piece of equipment aid them in their fight to stop crime?

No, use all available means to fight crime, but also use a bit of common sense, they could place the ANP equipment in a position not disrupt everyone.

You should of seen what happened when they did an ANPR sting on the M1 exiting London in the rush hour. Miles of traffic and cars pulled everywhere!

so your happy with hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of police resources tied up at the side of a grid locked motorway just incase someone who has forgotten thier tax this month drives past?

maybe if they just went about thier normal patrols with thier anpr equiped vehciles they would be doing a similar job,but a bit more effectively as they could all be on different roads and not just one.
