Of course the £14 is justified. Lets have a look at the path you go down...

28 days after your bill is produced you get your red reminder (Letter number 1)

35 days after your bill is produced you get a telephone call from a debt agent (telephone call number 1)

42 days after your bill is produced you get a disconnection notice (Letter number 2 - stating unless you pay withing 10 working days you will be charged £14)

49 days after your bill is produced you get another telephone call from a debt agent (telephone call number 2)

56 days after your bill is produced you get issued a telemessage and are charged £14

Would it surprise you, Mr Proud British Gas Employee, to hear that I have received precisely zero phone calls from your 'debt agents'? And if you're so keen perhaps you can tell me why mail from BG always takes a week to reach me?

Five months to save up some money. Five months of pension credit payments. Five months to glance at your meter and estimate how much you should be saving.

You are, of course, correct - it is more trouble than it's worth for British Gas to go through the Courts and demand the penalty you owe them. This does not justify your specious, vexatious complaint. Other branches of these forums may celebrate such petty-minded arm-chancing. Here, however, many of us are more interested in what is fair (other than when we are pig-piling on nPower.)

You still haven't explained why you short-mindedly are voting for Christmas.

It must be so wonderful to be you; I'm so envious. I too am interested in what is fair, which is why I asked a question in the first place.

Is English your first language? If so perhaps you will be kind enough to tell me what 'short-mindedly' means. I am used to seeing this kind of mangling of the English language on American forums, but I have never seen it before in this country, despite my degree.

While you're at it, perhaps you will explain what it is about my question that you find 'specious and vexatious'. Are you aware that these words are legally significant?

You are out of order, as you have been all along. You deliberately stick your nose into something and, without bothering to establish exactly what the nature of my query is, you make assumptions and act on them accordingly. You represent everything that is disgusting about political correctness in this country.

In short, you are a PITA and I neither want nor need to hear from you again; go find someone who cares about your unpleasant, snide comments.

(It's a pejorative play on 'short-sightedness'. I mistakenly believed you to be intelligent enough to realise that.)

You still have not addressed the central contradiction of your complaint.

I repeat: "In short, you are a PITA and I neither want nor need to hear from you again; go find someone who cares about your unpleasant, snide comments."

Also just to add I'm sure if you contacted British Gas to let them know why you were unable to pay at that time they would have put a hold on the account, did you contact them at all?

Is there a Just-So story about that? Or am I confusing Kipling with Califia?
